Commercial Description:
Dogwood Bock is a German style lager brewed in the traditional bock style to celebrate the coming of spring. It has a big, smooth, rich maltiness, yet is gently shaped and balanced by a firm hoppiness.

A little fruity and thin. Caramel and malt along with a little hoppy flavor.

amber, frothy white head, good sweet malt flavor, touch of carmel, hint of esters, balanced but not hoppy or bitter, complex for a bock

creamy malt flavor, low bitterness, malty but dry, great carmel character
-------- /> Date: 04/15/2004

still very rich carmel malt flavor with only a touch of sweetness and just enough bitterness in the finish to keep it honest

Pours a rich golden brown with a 1/8 inch tan head. dissipates quickly but leaves some persistent lace. Smell is malty and lightly fruity. Taste is malty and light sweet caramel. Fruity too. Lightly bitter in the aftertaste. Medium bodied with the caramel aftertaste. Stickiness lingers after it’s gone. Can’t put my finger on it but there is something in the finish that I don’t like the taste of. Not bad. A pretty fair bock beer.

I was very sad to see Dogwood close and it was because of this beer. I first tried it as a sample at the Rusty Nail on Buford Highway and immediately went to Green’s and bought a 6-pack. While not the greatest beer in the world, it was intriguing enough for me to see if Dogwood could bottle a consistent beer. This was the only beer made by Dogwood that I ever had that didn’t have a skunky bottle in the pack.

Poured a rather hazy amber color with a pretty light head, even with a vigorous pour. Not too much complexity in the aroma The flavor was very malty, which I enjoyed as I am not a huge fan of hops. On the whole however, this beer did not impress me, and will surely ot be one of my repeats.

I like wacky label art as much as the next guy, but this one seems to suggest that goats and beer bottles were delivered to Earth by U.F.O.’s...not sure why they’re implying this, just seems a little bit weird... Cloudy, dark amber color, with a fizzy, buzzing, active, slim cream-colored head. In the nose, a toffee-ish sweetness, soft, sweet, fruity. In the taste, more of the same, well-modulated, nice and juicy...pretty nice bock bier, I says. Ah, nice flavor rising up with every sip. Medium bodied, nice, sweet finish. Got to hand it to Dogwood, UFOs or no, this is a beauty of a bock.

Poured amber with a moderate, short-lived white head. Rich of aroma of malts -- and that’s just about it. The flavor was much the same, a sweet caramel maltiness but just not enough hops to balance. And the beer was too thin for my tastes. Not a bad brew, but not remarkable in any way. For a brewery that I hold in such high regard as Dogwood, I’m disappointed. I’m even more disappointed, however, to see Dogwood closing its doors. Farewell to a great brewery.
