Finish very much to the dry side. Enjoyable, but something is out of balance that I can’t put my finger on. kwoeltje (1327), Manchester, Missouri, USA

Dark brown and mysterious it rewards you with a plethera of flavors and nuances. Quite malty up front but mellow in the finish. Leaves a nice hop bitterness lingering on the tongue. Best Dogwood beer I've tasted. skaughty (621), Marietta, Georgia, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Apr 5, 2004 Updated: May 10, 2004Sampled on tap at Athens brewfest. The aroma was potent, but with so many malts and hops, the hop aroma was dominant. Poured a tiny head over a slightly hazy chesnut color. The roasted caramel flavor not powerful (or spicy) enough to match expectations, based on its descriptive ("10 malts and 10 hops"). The astringent, bitter finish did last about 10 seconds. rajendra82 (704), Alpharetta, Georgia, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Mar 19, 2004 Tried it on tap at Summits Wayside Tavern. Dogwood brews have been a hit or miss proposition for me, so I was a bit apprehensive. Cloudy dark brown in appearance, with a small white head. The first sip was a bit disappointing with mouthfeel that was a bit too thin and watery. But then things got a lot better. Later sips revealed a very smooth beer that was quite drying on the palette. I found the taste to be very delicately malty and balanced out nicely by a subtle hoppy aroma. Very quaffable and thirst quenching brew that lacks much clout. Very similar to a German Alt in most respects.
If this decadent ale got one more 10 in there (that being 10% ABV), it would be an all 5 brew.

| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Mar 4, 2004 Hazy brown with amber highlights that produces a thin tan ring and minimal lace. The aroma hints of floral and piney hops, raosted malts, caramel and earthy yeast esters. The taste is piney and sappy, some sweet malt malt and biscuit background. Citric, woody and spicy supporting characteristics. The finish is very bitter. Dry and astringent mouthfeel. Unique and good beer, quaffable but a brown ale? Not really, more like a dark APA. | 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Mar 3, 2004 Cloudy murky brown with a thin tan head. Mild malty aroma has a touch of hops. Pretty thin bodied and dry with some off-balanced earthiness to it. Something probably went wrong with this sample. scoobyluv (486), Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA
