Somehow it tasted very "compressed." The malty flush after initial lack of flavor was mixed with a compost pile flavor (earthy and old and a little mossy). Flavor is same, with some chocolate tastes along with the smokiness. Very watered down, however, not the best. Shag (1923), Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jan 11, 2004 Appearance was a murky brown with a moderate head and good lacing. Aroma was of hops and fruit. Flavor was an abundance of malts and hops with some grapefruits and caramel detected. This was unlike any "brown ale" Ive had. This reminded me more of an English Pale Ale. Another winner from Dogwood! biermonk (259), San Francisco, California, USA

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 8, 2003 This is almost like a mixture of their stout and pale ale, but better! The flavours are great. It's just like a light, semi-sweet stout. One of dogwood's best. MrRomero (1934), Nolanville, Texas, USA

Mild hop aroma with a light hop flavor. Mild roast malt and a tad bit of spice. Served too cold here. harlequinn (2745), Tacoma, Washington, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Nov 2, 2003 This stuff is just awesome and that is really all there is to say about it, try and make up your own mind. A definite porter quality with some nice mellow roastiness, nutty flavor dominate. Nice chocolately coffee esque character that is not overly sweet or bitter. Perfectly balanced and lightly complex. wunderbier (1271), Tampere, Finland
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 21, 2003 Updated: Jan 9, 2004Draught, shaker glass. Tight, creamy, white head is decently lasting a reminds me of fluffed egg whites. Deep black-brown body with cola like edges. Mild coffee, milk chocolate malt (mod); piney hops (light); port, red wine, raisin aromas. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter with a lightly sweet, moderately bitter finish. The flavor lacks any real depth and is very Guinness like (minus the ashtray). Medium body, fizzy carbonation, watery texture. The bottom line is: I was expecting much more from this beer.
