Aroma is sherry like, caramel, bready, toasty, brown sugary, and fruity. Aged fruity, very mild, sort of like fruit cake. Non distinct, but fruity and present. Well balanced, but a bit sweet overall, medium bodied, low carbonation, and very smooth. Damn this is a nice, well aged beer! Thank you Matt for sending it to me, and I wish there was more to be had! I may keep the others for myself, being the selfish bastard that I might be!!! mds (2112), Toronto, Ontario, Canada
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 10, 2006 Bottle. Pours a cloudy caramel brown body with a small white creamy head. Potent aroma - lots of toasty malts, spritzy bread, and orange hops. Thick and hot body! Really there is a lot of alcohol here. The hops are prevalent in a viscous manner along with bitter toffee. Not much balance here and it’s really slow to drink. As it warmed up it gave in a little bit but I couldn’t get into it as much as some others on the panel. Sammy (4065), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

This is a hoppy barleywine, maybe one of the first. Not as good as the other Dogwood I have enjoyed and unexpected Americanized barleywine . was better a year later. Cletus (5060), Connecticut, USA

Smells of licorice, bananas, malt, caramel, toffee and somewhat boozy. Tastes of licorice, bananas, malt and some mellowed out hops. Not as boozy as the aroma suggests. The best of a tasting that included Behemoth. sliffy (2012), Columbus, Ohio, USA

The Excellent Adventure surely is an excellent barley wine. The pour is a dark amber with ruby red highlights. A nice sweet aroma that has hints of bourbon. Flavor is sweet, mollasses and a really good amount of hops to balance it out very nicely. The mouthfeel is almost perfect to boot. fordest (1954), Santee/San Diego, California, USA
