Enticing hazelnut, cappucino, and fudge brownies in the aroma. Divine dark rum and vanilla notes as well. Flavor is robust yet smooth, rich coffee or Kahlua, chocolate, and pecan praline. Satiny and mousselike on the tongue. Restrained bittersweet aftertaste (Lindt "Excellence" 70% Cocoa fine dark chocolate, if you've ever had it), and just a kiss of earthy hop. Extremely smooth and flavorful. jasonp (1513), Sterling/Dulles, Virginia, USA

Taste has notes of roasted malt, chocolate syrup, coffee and a very solid hop presence. Nice level of sweetness. Finish is slightly burnt with a hint of fruitiness. Mouthfeel is very full, round, thick and creamy on the palate with lively carbonation- just glorious. Not much lacing or head retention. Overall, an awesome stout. Obsidian pour with medium tan head. Aroma is big roasty malt, with chocoff, some vanilla, and some soy sauce. Tastes roasty malty, with big chocoff. Smooth palate, very complex, dense, balanced, and tasty. I’ll be getting the last dregs of this on my way back to PA, along with any other Dogwood beers I find. The demise of Dogwood is one of the greatest travesties of the 21st century thus far. jagstang76 (1), Georgia, USA does not count | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 18/20 | Aug 20, 2004 I haven’t found a Dogwood brew that don’t like, and their stout no exception. The first thing that strikes you about this beer is its wonderful coffee aroma. I’m not a huge coffee fan, but this brew had just the right amount of coffee aroma and flavor to where I could really enjoy it. Medium body, sort of light for stout, and black to the point it was not translucent. Overall, a very enjoyable ale that was crafted for maximum drinkability. thedm (3836), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 3, 2003 Updated: Dec 18, 2003From MRomero548 at the RBSG 2003, Thanks for trading me this one! This brew poured a small head of brown bubbles of fine to medium size that left a good lacing and a slightly carbonated opaque black brown body. It has an excellent sweet chocolate malt aroma and a sweet coffee mild malt flavor. It went down very smoothly. This brew is very well done, nicely balanced and does not have a strong bite.
December 2003 Rerate: Strange, I rerated it exactly the same as I did the first time! Still wonderful! haukur (684), Reykjavik, Iceland
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Feb 21, 2004 Arome is lots of roasted malt, with some coffe notes. Taste is also very roasted, but nice on the tongue, some hops and chocolate, with a bitter finish... good brew Oakes (8114), Kowloon, Hong Kong

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 29, 2004 Unfiltered obsidian with dark ruby edges. Thick, lastingly rocky, pasty tan foam. Chocolate fudge aroma with plenty of roasted barley, cocoa-dusted peanuts and truffle. Mild roastiness underneath a light note of coffee, charcoal, toast, cream and very vague fruity hop character. Densely creamy, chewy body with lots of fluff. Plum and black cherries swim in chocolate and nestle up to a tasty sugar, smoke and leather blend. Feathery, lightly acidic, roasted barley twinge helps to manage the rich chocolate. Light hop bitterness and burnt malts fight for position at the back of the throat, with neither coming out on top. Ends a tad lighter in body yet with substantial charred malt girth, which handles the dark fruits and mild roasted malt bedding without any trouble. The acidity is here, but never becomes a distraction, thanks to the rich chocolate and cocoa. Hazelnuts, coffee, wax, caramel and truffle remnants amid a very well-placed fruity hop accent. Excellent stout.
