Thick and viscous. Mouthfeel is great, big upfront molassas then tapers down to a nice bitter chocolate. Need to get some more. Pailhead (2597), Allen Park, Michigan, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 22, 2005 Bottle: Tons of dark chocolate in the aroma. Coffee is more of a background aroma because the mocha presence is so strong. Pours very dark brown, virtually black, with a nice brown head that fades relatively quickly. Light chocolate up front with a cafe mocha finish. Roasted coffee presence is much greater in the finish and continues into the aftertaste. Light wood comes with the coffee in the finish and aftertaste. Not as much chocolate flavor as aroma would lead you to believe. Nice smooth mouthfeel. Many thanks to Styles for this retired beer. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 20, 2005 22oz. bottle. Aroma is powerfully malty, roasty and darkly sweet, some creamy chocolate noted along with lighter suggestions of espresso, praline, vanilla, earth and even some mildly piney hop as it warms. Densely thick black color with a fine, slight, brown head and impressive legs. Flavor is comprised of varying degrees of rich, roasted malt, semi-sweet chocolate, something like cherries dipped in melted brown sugar and then lightly charred, followed by some mild hop bitterness and flavor. Yields a mild warmth at the back of the throat, complimenting the thick, lightly syrupy mouthfeel. Excellent. What a shame it’s no longer produced. Thanks, Jay! hopdog (5606), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA

Poured a dark, dark black with an averaged sized brown head. Aromas of roasted malts, chocolate, light alcohol and smoke. Tastes of chocolate, nuts, roasted malts, dark fruits and smoke. Very tasty. Thanks to goldtwins for trading me this one! dhlesq (233), Thousand Oaks, California, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 14, 2005 Roasty aroma of chocolate, oysters, molasses. Appears almost black with a ruby hue where the light permeates the lip of the glass; appear oily. No head to speak of. Flavor is roasty, chocolatey, hazelnutty, a bit salty, some coffee, somewhat acidic at the finish. Palate is light but slippery with good bubbliness. Overall, this beer is just a bit more than the sum of its parts. Thanks very much to TheBeerCellar2 for this tasty brew. shadey (1500), Rochester, New York, USA
| 4.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Mar 1, 2005 Updated: Feb 28, 200922oz bottle. Perhaps one year old. Black oily pour with a thick dark brown heavy head. Very interesting aroma. Actually its absolutely delicious. I could sit here and sniff this beer all night. Chocolate and roast blended to perfection. Palate is smooth and clean. It continues to get better sip after sip. My ONLY complaint is that the body isn’t quite thick enough. But I am not sure how fair that is. It is supposed to be a porter, not a stout. It really breaks my heart that this brewery is closed and this beer may never be brewed again.
RERATE: 22oz bottle. November 06. Little over 2 years old. Black oily pour with no head unless vigorously poured in which case I get a very thin dark tan film. The aroma is very rich dark chocolate and bitter roast. The flavor is still very well blended with no one character dominating except maybe the dark chocolate. Body seems less thick than I remember but that could be the age. Still a fantastic beer. 9/4/9/4/19
RERATE: 22oz bottle. Almost 3 years old. The pour is a beautiful thing. So attractive. Dark tan mocha head. Aroma is still an enticing mix of chocolate, vanilla, and just a touch of roast. I can’t wait to taste, it’s been 8 months since my last taste. The upfront flavor is chocolate, smooth and rich, but the vanilla appears as it rolls over the tongue. Finally the cleansing bitterness of the roast kicks in on the back of the tongue and in the finish. This beer is truly elegant. The body is about the same as around 2 years old. A little thinner than fresh, but still substantial and a little chewy. Every time I drink this beer it’s an absolute pleasure. A true masterpiece. 9/4/9/4/19
22oz Consumed in February 2009. Very smooth and silky in body with no oxidation in the flavor. Still fantastic and a pure pleasure to drink. Sham (1846), Seattle, Washington, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 22, 2005 Black, opaque. Thin, oily dark tan head with some lacing. Bitter aromas with strong roast and some chocolate. Hazelnut and mint, slightly vinous. The flavor is nice. Overtones of hazelnut and mocha. It tastes like the coffee I had this morning. Not so vinous as the nose, but it is there. Bitterness comes through in hop and roast form. Chocolates as well. Coats the mouth being slick and oily. Finishes chocolaty and slightly bitter. Doesn’t seem too much like a porter though, imperial stout maybe. Maybe not. It was good. Dixen (1465), Flagstaff, Arizona, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Feb 20, 2005 Very roasty aroma. Jet black body, with a nice tan head on top. Good coffee notes in the flavor and some other stuff that i cant read from my handwritten rating. But it was darn good!
