| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Dec 7, 2004 The appearance is a five if I’ve ever seen one. Oure thick black even on the pour and obviously settles deep black with a thin brown head. The aroma is dominated by a bready malt character with chocolate undertones. Roasted malt flavors that weave into a dark flavor and coffee presence that is malty but also lends a coffee bitterness. Alcohol does make a small apperance but doesn’t over power. Good full, deep fruity, and roasted feel in the mouth. JPDIPSO (4932), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 6, 2004 Blends in perfectly with the black lettering on my Christoffel tasting glass. Small dense dark cocoa colored head. Just a few small lines of lace. Rick, thick and smooth as silk on the palate, maybe a touch too syrupy. Dark chocolate and mild coconut aromas. Touch of caramel and vanilla as well in the nose. Lots of malt in here. Hard to believe this is 8%. Like drinking melted heavy chocolate malt. Only mild roasted malt in the flavor. A lighter version of the Dark Load without the huge hops and sludge. Thanks John and Tom. 5000 (2602), Hardened Liver, Washington, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Dec 3, 2004 Bottle pours absolutely pitch black, medium brown fizzly head, with so so lacing. Absolutely no light gets through this one. Heaps of cocoa on the nose, subtle hints of maple syrup and coffee. Smells like a fancy breakfast! Completely divine! Heavily roasted malts, chocolatey (only slightly dry), and a soft hop bitterness on the backside. So smooth... The thing I like best is that it isn’t as dry as many other beers with such chocolate flavor. Wonderful body, silky smooth mouthfeel. Finishes with loads of cocoa, fairly sweet, and roasted malts. Its a shame this stuff is retired. Simply fantastic this stuff is! Major thanks goes out to goldtwins for the trade!

| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Nov 29, 2004 Had this at the DC/MD/VA/WV/PA gathering. Bottle courtesy of hopscotch. Pitch black body. Small brown head. Nose is rich chocolate, alcohol, rum soaked fruit, roasted malt and light hints of coffee. More rich dark chocolate in the taste, along with roasted malt, molasses, brown sugar, light licorice and dark fruit. Body is thick and chewy with a slight alcohol warmth to it. Finish is more warming underlying the chocolate, roasted malt, and molasses. Great beer! Too bad they are gone. cquiroga (370), Sylmar, California, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 28, 2004 11/13/04. Poured out of 22 oz. bottle, obtained in a trade with CaptainCougar on RateBeer 10/23/04. Pours a dark cola brown with very very little head even on a vigorous pour and with a shake of the glass. Head is dark tan-brown (while it’s there) and dissipating. Not much lacing. Aroma is mossy and peaty, but where’s the dark malt? Flavor is chocolatey, very nicely layered with cocoa powder, sort of a milkiness, clean dark malt, and light earthy sweetness. Very subtle and very good. Body is slick and smooth, very nicely oily. Finishes medium long with light dryness, nice balanace and good mouthfeel. Sweetly smoky. Very elegant but a bit simple in the aroma and with an "incomplete" appearance. Good stuff. Thanks, CaptainCougar! whaleman (2171), North Wales, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Nov 27, 2004 Updated: Dec 15, 2004Opaque, very dark brown body with a small, fading, filmy tan head. Nose of milk chocolate, a hint of coffee, and earthy hops. Flavor of chocolate-covered raisins and roasted coffee. Low bitterness, medium acidity, and substantial sweetness with a lactose quality. The combination of raisins, burnt roast, and sugar sweetness is disharmonious. Full-bodied, but slightly oily mouthfeel with minimal carbonation. May have been better fresh but, as is, this is a good beer but a substandard rendition of one of my favorite styles. Thanks to CaptainCougar. Dough77 (777), Aurora, Illinois, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Nov 25, 2004 dont completely understand why this wasnt just a stout rather than an "imperial porter" but nonetheless was great in every aspect. Pour reminded me alot of a barrel aged brew, nice small head, lots of alcholic hints in the nose. Taste and aroma were great fillled with chocolate, dark malt, slight smoke, and sweetness. Overall a great brew, probably top 10 worthy. DYCSoccer17 (2201), Davis, California, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Nov 24, 2004 Sampled with omhper, tiggmtl, MartinT, muzzlehatch, and Rastacouere in Montreal. Bottled thanks to barry. Funky aroma with slight metallic hints and some sweet chocolates. Becomes more aromatic and pleasant with time. Dark brown color with an absolutely gorgeous dark brown head. Sweet chocolates with notes of birch bark smoke. Roasted finish and slightly muddy for a porter.
