Malt, alcohol, and a little bit of hops. Flavor has a decent amount of alcohol. Spicy malt. Note quite as smooth as I would have hoped but that could be the young-ness of the beer. Really its the finish that bothers me. The finish is long and alcoholic. Not a bad beer at all, but a bit dissapointing. puzzl (2635), New York, New York, USA

For a beer that covered it’s alcohol so well, this bourbon barrel aging sure did a number on this one. As usual, the bourbon completely dominates the flavor and ruins most of the experience. While it retains it’s better characteristics from its original form, it gains an awesome complexity in the aroma from the oak that is absolutely marvelous. Unfortunately, the flavor takes a hit, and exhibits more bourbon than anything else. Removes quite a bit of the pleasantry. Really, the aroma is improved so much in this it is phenominal, but the flavor just can’t live up to its original form, and thus must be docked. henrikb (1303), Aarhus, Denmark
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Aug 9, 2006 Amber body with a beautiful red shine, creamy beige head; Very, very balanced soft nose: warm butter, very soft buttery nuts. Clear notes of both barrel and bourbon stands out as well, the softness of melted homemade vanilla ice-cream, sharpness of bourbon, complex, deep and super pleasant; Generally soft body, texture is soft but could be softer (more velvety), same for the very small amount of carbonation, a bit salty and a bit bitter; Alcohol stands out as soon as the beer is swallowed, in a very pleasant way, and burns the sides of the tongue, this burn stays long, aromas ate not as complex as in nose, bourbon and barrel (oak) stands out the most. Great beer! Thanks a lot to Numenor. jrob21 (1271), Atlanta, Georgia, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 31, 2006 I have been having some awesome beers recently. I couldn’t wait any longer to pop this one open. Big bourbon and alcohol aromas. Nice creamy vanilla flavors. Slightly sugary and smooth as well. Full bodied with a quick finish. hellomynameis (794), Mayer, Minnesota, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Jul 3, 2006 Poured a clear ruby red colour with no head at all...well maybe a few soap bubbles...
Deep, complex, sweet, tasty. There is a nice thick mouthfeel, not syrupy, but not thin at all. Lots of oak flavour, more so than burbon, but there is still a kick of burbon alcohol in there. I see vanilla and orange thrown around and I can agree. JCapriotti (1378), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 24, 2006 Deep rusted copper. Fizzy / soapy light tan head. Aroma is very pleasant... classic barleywine with some smooth vanilla, fresh orange hops. Mmm... good stuff. Crisp woody orange-hopped malt sums it up. Vanilla aspects. Very smooth and crisp barleywine... I think barrel aging and some time in the bottle did this very well. DCJack (146), Alabama, USA

It has a kick you in the teeth bite, that is not sharp or bitter, but not sweet either.
the effect is like a martial arts master who has incredible power, but does nothing to demonstrate it.
it is complex, yet refined. Bold yet smooth.
unlike any other beer, and an excellent barleywine, possibly the best.

I didn’t really detect any barrel aging notes in the nose. big fussel caramel notes and oxidized malts in the flavors. this beer has not aged as well as i would have thought. as it warmed, the barrel aging showed more in the flavors. body is slick, but a little lite for the style.
