nimbleprop (701), SouthWest, Washington, Washington DC, USA Jun 12, 2009 12oz bottle from Rodman’s. Pours a transparent orange with a thin, fast fading white head. Low carbonation level. Aroma is sticky hops, sticky fruits, sticky caramel sugars. Flavor has more sticky fruits, apples, oranges, pears, grass, booze, rum. Medium mouthfeel, 11.4% hides well. Doubt this needs much aging, it’s ready to drink now. ChainGangGuy (2313), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA Jun 8, 2009 11 ounce goblet - $4.25 at Taco Mac in Buford, Georgia.
Appearance: Arrived at Table Fifty-Three a clear, dark amber body with a thin, fine, egg shell-colored head.
Smell: Sweet-smelling, fruit-scented nose of malts (brown sugar, then dark caramel, then Grade B maple syrup) and fresh-made chutney with an overall earthiness to it and marked by whiffs of alcohol.
Taste: Sweet tastes brown sugar and dark caramel with just a touch of chewy breadiness to the overall maltiness. Fruity mixture of ripe cherry, apple, and discarded plumskins which, along with the booze contained within, gives these tastes a slight liqueur feel to them. Sure, I’m willing to cheerfully accept a certain amount of alcohol, but the level of heat its imparting is rather unbecoming. Hint of cinnamon with a wry, knowing wink and the "shhh" finger. Earthy, woody hop character with maybe a light vague touch of citrus. Moderate hop bitterness. Then, it’s back to the fruits swirled in brown sugar and maple syrup. Finishes fruity, bittersweet, and with more than a noticeable hint of alcoholic heat.
Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium carbonation.
Drinkability: At this stage, it’s still a bit coarse and unrefined, but it’s basically good. Though it does make me more than wistful for a bottle of J.W. Lee’s Harvest Ale or, hell, one of my older bottles of Oak Barrel-Aged Millennium. I’m just sayin’! LtDan (342), LA - Originally from South NJ!, California, USA Jun 5, 2009 Appearance: Pours a cloudy orange with a modest 1/4 inch white head.
Aroma: Resinous hops, grapefruit, and some caramel malts.
Taste: Bitterness, some caramel, some citrus, and some warm booze.
Mouthfeel: Thick.
Overall: Not offensive, not impressive, just average for a barleywine. dasMario (1), Oakton, Virginia, USA does not count May 24, 2009 Bottle brewed in February 2009. Hands down my absolute favourite beer from Dominion Brewing Company! Strong hoppy citrusy aroma, with a flavour reminiscent of orange, dried apricot, golden raisins, and honey. The finish is excellent with lovely hints of cinnamon, ginger, and white pepper. Cheers! NomDeBeer (327), Maryland, USA May 19, 2009 Bottled Feb 2009. Pours a rich copper color with no head. Aroma is alcohol and honey. Taste is caramel, honey, alcohol, and a nice citrus hop finish. Heavy mouth feel with moderate carbonation. Definitely a sipper considering the body, alcohol, and smack-you-in-the-face flavor profile. Very enjoyable though. Skeegle (399), Maryland, USA May 19, 2009 Decent barley wine that’s got its fair share of sweetness and bitterness. For me there seems to be an odd third party at work, like the alcohol in this is particularly astringent, almost distracting. I couldn’t really detect the honey which I was dissappointed about. This is a nice beer, but I had been looking forward to this one for a while and maybe I built it up too much. A nice and warm beer, it’s powerful stuff. Derek881 (432), Frederick, Maryland, USA May 13, 2009 Poured from the bottle into a pint glass to drink. The beer had an amber-copper color with a smaller, foamy white head that was short-lived. A pleasant pine and citrus hops aroma with some fruity notes of raisin and cherry to complement. The taste was briefly sweet and fruity before giving way to a heavy sour and bitter mixture of dense fruit and grain flavors. It had a heavy, highly carbonated body that was definitely best for sipping; a very filling mouthfeel with a detectable presence of alcohol. iowaherkeye (1651), relocated to Santa Rosa f/Iowa, California, USA May 4, 2009 12oz, bottling date 040306. Thanks to moejuck for the bottle. Clear orange amber with a 1/2 finger light beige head, fading to a thin film and ring after a few minutes. Aroma is fairly oxidized and sweet with caramel malts, honey, and a tinge of brown sugar. There is also a little vanilla. The flavor adds a bit of plum and raisin notes, and doesn’t taste quite as oxidized as the aroma led on, but that’s not to say it isn’t pretty oxidized. Sweet finish with a little bit of alcohol presence, very low bitterness. Low carbonation with a full body. An OK beer.
