Buttery aroma is surprisingly hoppy. Minimal oxidation. The body comes alive with lots of hop bitterness and caramel sweetness. Honey is present through and through. Sweet cherry and apple esthers in the body. Really original. fiulijn (7150), Como; Lausanne (CH); Malmö (SWE), Italy
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 4, 2007 Updated: Oct 4, 20082008-09-06, draught at Old Dominion Brewhouse, Washington, 6-3-7-4-14=34 It’s served in a completely wrong glass; hazy amber color. It has some malt aroma. Good body, good caramel flavor, with correct sweetness, good bitterness level, some alcohol feeling. Powerful but not exciting, it doesn’t keep up with the bottled version.
2007-09-11, vintage 2005, 8-5-9-4-17=43 Beautiful red-amber color. Buttery malt aroma. Strong mouthfeel, rich malt flavor, very sweet, with sweet caramel, fudge, cookies, sweet chocolate; warming, with a touch of aged rum; a good hopping provides the necessary balance. The flavor is a bit more on the sweet side; the palate a bit more bitter, with strong toffee character. Excellent.
Comparison to the oak aged version. This one has a stronger character and is more warming, both the aroma and flavor are maltier, resulting in a stronger body too, and the final is more bitter; in other words, it’s more complex. This beer can stand a longer cellaring. A solid beer to be fully enjoyed, whenever there is a chance. Papsoe (14883), Frederiksberg, Denmark

Hazy, amber golden with an off-white head that leaves some lacework. Extremely dry whiskey aroma. Medium in body with a strangely limited malt base and again these very distinct notes of whiskey. Somehow the body isn’t huge enough to contain all the alcohol hence the beer appears somewhat inharmonious. But not unpleasant in any way. 201107 BDR (2154), Roseville, Minnesota, USA

Caramel malt and citrus rise above the alcohol in the body. Almost cloying. dkachur (2352), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA

Pours brown with an orange tint, almost looks a little viscous. Sweet malty aroma, honey, brown sugar, with a bit of spice. Taste is more of that sweetness punctuated with a fairly strong hoppiness. Probably about average for a barleywine, but should be an enjoyable drink. unclemattie (2401), Georgia, USA

Alcohol stood out the most with fermented barley field and some caramel. Murky rust body color with thin head. Some hints of fruit and caramel but the alcohol presence was overpowering any real flavor of this one. Little harsh whiskey feel down the hatch and an alcohol warming effect on the body. Whew....
