heemer77 (4294), Savannah, Missouri, USA Jul 11, 2005 Thanks for sharing a bottle, hwy kevin. The barrel aging dominates this brew. Poured a dark amber witha yellowish head. The aroma is boozy vanilla and oak from the barrel aging. There are also some apples and a little cinnamon, but it is light. The taste is vanilla and oak. There is also a hint of cinnamon and some some chocolate. There is a little spice here. Fairly good, but one dimensional. Baler (7), Roanoke, Virginia, USA does not count Jun 25, 2005 Updated: Jan 26, 2006Bottle. Pours copper red with quickly fading head. Floral hops and a sucker-punch of piney hops on the nose. Taste starts out with a nice hop kick that fades into resin, pineapple and light caramel and honey notes. Alcohol warmth helps the malt aftertaste along. It’s more citrusey than most barley wines I’ve encountered but I’ve actually grown to like that aspect. BlueDevil0206 (122), Durham, North Carolina, USA Jun 12, 2005 Updated: Jun 25, 2005On tap at the Innsbrook Capital Ale house in a goblet. ’04 vintage. Appears a deep reddish copper with a small, quite dissipating off-white head. Hazy as could be though it was very cold. Aroma was strong with alcohol and sharp piney, resiny hops and a lot of malty sweetness. Flavor was of sweet caramel malt with some toffee and fruit along with more sharp resinous hops. Also some yeastyness came through so maybe that keg was on it’s last legs and that’s why it was so cloudy. It finished oddly dry for a barleywine. Mouthfeel is ever so slightly thin for a BW but smooth as silk and moderate carbonated (a plus). Pretty good BW but far from the best I’ve had. richlikebeer (823), Easton, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 7, 2005 cloudy copper color with very little white head, that faded fast and turned to a slight ring of lacing around the inside edge of the glass. hints of yeast and spices, some resin, alcohol, and vanilla in the nose. flavor starts very strong and the mellows out. the front end is bitter and hoppy, the mellowness comes out in the form of some caramel flavors before a bitter, bread and resinous aftertaste comes in. the abv is very noticable in the aftertaste, as well as providing a significant warming sensation. MullMan (1080), Bloomfield, New Jersey, USA May 11, 2005 2004 bottle. chilly to room temp. orangey-copper color, lightly hazy. foamy light tan head that goes real quickly. leaves a foam ring inside the glass. sherry notes, young white grapes too. sweet resiny malt aroma. flavor starts very mild for a barley wine - thin, then hoppy. sweet vinuous malt reaches the palate, then enhanced at the finish and aftertaste. alcohol heat surfaces in the aftertaste. high carbonation for a barleywine also pretty tame. FoolishMortal (965), San Diego, California, USA May 11, 2005 Pours a clear orange amber color. Big malt aroma with a framework of floral hoppiness. Malty nose, builds into a greater level of sweetness with a tide of alcohol warmth backing it. Sharp and floral hoppiness dominates the finish, with more alcohol presence. DocLock (4648), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA May 9, 2005 Found this at State Line in Elkton, MD. Pours a great deep copper shade with medium off-white head. Aroma of big caramel malt, dark fruit, spices, hops. Tastes very fruity, with firm malt, hops, and some cognac at the finish. Smooth, firm mouthfeel, with a great balance and complexity. Definitely in the upper tier of barleywines. meathookjones (245), Sterling, Virginia, USA May 7, 2005 12 oz bottle with a bottled on date of Feb 19, 2004. Appearance in the glass is a dark amber color with about a half-inch of beige head that dies down quickly to a random scattering of bubbles. Left a bit of lace as well as it was consumed. Sweet malt and fruity notes dominated the aroma. Notes of molasses were present as was a bit of alcohol as this warmed. Sweet tasting upfront and a bit of molasses and alcohol lingering in the background. Also there were notes of dark fruits and a slight alcohol bite on the aftertaste. It was sweet but not cloying as the alcohol and hops kept that in check. Almost full bodied this was rich and coating in the mouth. Tasty stuff that I have drank several of upon occasion and a release I always look forward each year.
