hopdog (5527), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 29, 2004 2001 Vintage. Poured a dark and hazy reddish brown color with a smaller tan head. Aromas of brown sugar, molasses, apples, and light alcohol. Smooth tasting. Subtle tastes verses the stronger aromas. No alcohol in the taste. Additional tastes of vanilla and sour citris. This was very good. Pigfoot (2226), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Dec 20, 2004 Color is a bright ruby red, underneath a solid creamy head. Aroma is thick, pungent, oozing honeyish sweetness, and offering up a multitude of associations: molasses, rum, brandy, fruits, and candy. Taste is huge and fierce with hops, but never too much, it feels juuuust right. Malt comes to the the fore now, and the feeling is toasty and warm. A welcome and lasting finish.
Somewhat mild, I felt, in some mysterious way, than other, bolder barleywines, but very true to form and very enjoyable.
So why didn’t it feel like 11.4%? BuckNaked (1204), Tempe, Arizona, USA Dec 5, 2004 Updated: Jan 21, 20051998 Bottle sampled 12/4/04: Reddish amber with a tan head that quickly fades. Aroma is berries, port, malt, grains, citrus. Taste is chcolate syrup, molasses, berries, hops, sweet malts. This aged nicely. Thanks to jeffc666. Re-rate 1/20/05: Amber with ruby highlights, light tan head. Aroma: alcohol, berries, wood, grains, malt, sherry, grapes. Taste: berries, orange, raisins, wood, sour beer, syrupy malts, tangerine, citrus, apples. egajdzis (3602), Spring Mount, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 5, 2004 1998... Poured a reddish copper color with a thin off white head, and also left nice lacing on the glass. Musty aroma of citrus, tropical fruits, and sweet caramel malts. More sweet malts in the taste, some watermelon, alcohol pepperiness, and this was surprisingly and pleasantly hoppy for its age. Thanks jeffc666! jmuhops (663), Winchester, Virginia, USA Dec 1, 2004 1999 version. Pours a deep, hazy orange with a half-finger head. Could smell oranges as soon as I started the pour. The orange is mixed with a subtle bread aroma and some port-like notes once in the glass. Flavor is not as complex as the aroma--very smooth and sweet, with a lasting alcohol tinge. Very good beer. EddieG (163), Palos Heights, Illinois, USA Nov 20, 2004 I really enjoyed this beer. Deep reddish hue with a thin white head. Very sweet, tart wth deep flavor of prunes and plums. Very rich with a wonderful mouthfeel and aftertaste. I burbed this one pleasantly for a while. dolemike1 (1116), Jeannette, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 19, 2004 Draft, 02 version: Color is light reddish brown, almost like water mixed with some dyes. Aroma is diverse and intense, from candy sugar, to apple, grape, caramel , raisin, port and hops. Flavor is intense, sweet and delicious , with notes of the above plus more. Awesome beer, and i was lucky enough to get the last glass from the keg. footbalm (1218), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Oct 31, 2004 Updated: Feb 1, 2005I coludn’t tell if this said 98 or 00 on the bottle.Looks like Bayou water.Nose was Granny Smith Caramel apples and something else like mint or rosemary?Flavors echoed the aromas on this as it tasted like I was eating a Caramel apple, but kind of a sour one.Nice body but not my favorite BW.Had another and this one seemed very different.Nice
