obisbeer (558), Barcelona, Spain Oct 29, 2004 98vintage: Murkey brown/red w/no head. Sweet malt, sour citrus, vanilla, yeast, and a herbal note (mint?) all on the nose. Heavey sweet, and lingering finish. Winey, vanilla, carmel, odd green fruit quality, boozy finish, anise, and herbal notes all play across the palate. Strange, good...not a favorite. mkobes (2103), paramus, New Jersey, USA Oct 9, 2004 Botle. Golden in color. Malty aroma, and hoppy. Flavor is very heavy. Full bodied. I get vanilla flavor out of this. Drinkable. Enjoyable. MaiBockAddict (1499), Good Beer Bar Deprived, New Jersey, USA Oct 9, 2004 2002 vintage. Orange with an off white head. Aroma of malt, hops, and a touch of oxidation. Smells like an aged barlywine for sure. Flavor is very heavy on the hops. Nice sherried malt underneath. Good mouth feel, with a hard alcohol-like presence. MrDick (277), San Francisco, California, USA Sep 17, 2004 Good but not very distinguishable from other traditional barleywines (I’m not counting the recent trend to over-hop the hell out of barleywines). Malty, caramel flavors with touches of prunes/raisons. Would like to age a bottle and see how it progresses. kujo9 (1077), North Ridgeville, Ohio, USA Sep 5, 2004 Bottle: Hazy medium amber w/ a non existant white head. Lacing is thin and sporadic, probably caused by higher alcohol. Aroma is citrusy and piney hops, solventy alcohol, some caramel and toasty malt. Fruitiness is medium, but mostly due to alcohol and hops, not fermentation IMHO. Alcohol gets stronger as it warms. Well balanced for a big beer, and slightly to bitter. Citrursy hops alcohol, moderate caramel malt in the start, bitterness and citrusy hop in the finish and aftertaste. Some solventy alcohol notes as it warms in the finish. Fuller bodied, medium carbonation, well hidden alcohol compared to flavor and aroma, lightly dry m/f. Not a bad barleywine, but definitely young and of need of some aging. I’d like to have another bottle to try in a couple years. FlacoAlto (2473), Tucson, Arizona, USA Sep 3, 2004 Bottled Feb 2004, Sampled September 2004
Pours a pretty clear amber copper color, and is topped by a midsized tan head. The aroma is of rich malt, alcohol, and a hint of hops, the malt definitely dominates though. Wow, this beer is thick and rich. The finish is made up of warming alcohol. This is very malty, with thick chewy notes of caramel, and biscuits.
There is actually quite a bit of hop contribution here as well, it was just hard to pick out because of the dominating maltiness. the hops are herbal, grassy, and piney up front. The finish is moderately bitter with a hint of astringency. Overall this is quite enjoyable, certainly it is quite flavorful and rich, though the hop flavor could be a bit more dynamic. Slick (1962), Thief River Falls, Minnesota, USA Aug 17, 2004 some what murky brown color, small head that faded quickly leaving little behind.Malty, fruity aroma with a decent hint of hops and maybe a little yeast and alcohol but its faint at best so far.malty flavor upfront with a bit of a fruit presence then it quickly changes to some bitter hops and an alcohol bite. Not bad but not exactly a brew that i’m fond of this time.It well worth the try but not a second time for me.Thanks to Slob for sending this brew my way. DarkElf (2681), La Jolla, California, USA Aug 2, 2004 (12 oz bottle: ScottVacula’s Barleywine Party 04) Malty and sweet like a typical barleywine, but also fairly bitter with a somewhat sharp hang in the finish; The palate is sweet and sticky, sharp in the finish and a bit hot; Fruity, sweet, mild malt aromas; Orange/amber in color; Tan head fades to a rim fairly quickly; Could use some aging at this point
