Flavours of the malt and hops mesh together creating a lovely warm treacle toffee. Sweet, warming, full bodied and well balanced. Terrific!
Thanks jgb9348! Radek Kliber (3926), Toronto (Can) Krotoszyn (Pol), Ontario, Canada May 22, 2004 Amber with respectable head considering hefty alcohol content. Malt base with some hoppy bitterness. Alcohol with time takes over producing warming feel. IPFreely (1470), Lewiston, New York, USA May 20, 2004 Lighter brown color, thin head. Big malt, slightly sweet, some underlying hops to balance it out. Smooth big body, nice alcohol masking. A nice treat. joeycapps (1466), Waterdown, Ontario, Canada May 18, 2004 Slightly hazy red-brown w/ frothy beige head that dissipated quickly. Fruity, malty nose. Full bodied. Malty flavour of caramel & molasses w/ an underlying fruitiness. Alcohol is well-hidden. jerc (3861), Toronto, Ontario, Canada May 16, 2004 Bit of rubbing alcohol is overly distracting in the aroma. Nice hoppy flavour with just enought malt in the background. Warming feeling in the throat belies the strength of this brew in a pleasant manner. A nice barleywine. Thanks Jeremy USA ;) Sickboy282 (1098), San Diego, California, USA May 3, 2004 Bottled 1998-Pours a deep cloudy brown with a small white head. Aromas of honey, coffee, and lots of sugar. slightly thick mouthfeel but leaves quickly. Not very carbonated, maybe bad sealing, but flaviors of honey, spice, and a little toffee. A very nice barley wine that I am lucky to have one aged, but it’s still missing something. But it is still better than a lot of barleywines out there. Thank you zathrus13 for the trade. SeamusNeko (45), Anacostia, Washington DC, USA Apr 29, 2004 Equipment: 12 oz bottle served at cellar temperature in a Trois Pistoles goblet. Bottled on date of 2/15/2004.
Appearance: Dark, clear amber liquid topped by a relatively large offwhite head. The foam sticks around for a bit before dissipating to a film and a ring.
Aroma: Intriguing mix of orange marmalade, caramel malts, and pineapple citrus (think the white gummmi bears) hops. Everything melds together quite nicely.
Flavor: An initially sweet whizbang of caramel malts that give way to peppery and bitter hop aftertastes. An amalgam of American and British barleywine styles. Toasted bread character.
Palate: Thick and heavy bodied with long lasting aftertastes that make one mellow.
Overall: Rock solid and beyond barleywine. Bargain priced to boot. Can’t wait to see what time does to this.
