Commercial Description:
Dominion Millennium is a very strong ale brewed in the English Barley Wine style. Often called the "sherry of the beer world", barley wine is best sipped at warmer temperatures, and should be enjoyed in moderation, as it contains twice the alcohol of regular beers.

Draught from a 5-year old keg. Pours a cloudy brown with a small white head. Aroma is very sweet---vanilla, oak, alcohol, and sweet sweet sweet malt. Flavor is the same--lots of vanilla, alcohol, and sweet super sweet malt. Oh yeah, it was sweet. Too much for me. To the rater below me: no the alcohol does not tone down with age. Blech. This was a disappointment. 4/4/4/2/8 (2.2/5)

[Bottle] Pours reddish-amber with a tiny off-white head. Aroma is fairly sweet, with a good deal of strawberry jam, some alcohol, a touch of lemon and notes of black pepper. Fairly typical for a barley wine, and although very nice, it falls short of being outstanding. The taste has a moderate amount of hop bitterness (perhaps below average considering this is a fresh bottle), along with alcohol again, a strong malt presence, and a faint, unidentifiable fruitiness. The mouthfeel is quite full, and the finish is long (and only marred by the strong alcohol, which hopefully will become toned down with age). After hearing rumors of this beer’s demise, i was hesitant to expect much. However, despite any declines in quality that have happened, it is still an enjoyable, reasonably priced barley wine.

Bottle from Captain Cougar. Thanks Tom! Rich reddish copper color with little head. Vinous aromas with lots of fruit and florality. Medium plus body with lots of fizz. Heat is noticeable. There are tropical fruit notes. Lots of caramel. Fruity hops pop up towards the finish. Something like a dry, heavy sherry. The fruitiness is a nice touch. Very enjoyable.

Bottle. Pours an amber color with a very large, frothy white head. Lacing is very good. Aromas of wine, port, pineapple, and hints of malts. Creamy initial mouthfeel with an oily finish, also a bit lively in the mouth. Tastes of hops (not expecting it from the aroma) and port. Very good barley wine.

12 oz bottle from State Line Liquors. Pours a clear reddish amber with a medium sized foamy off white head that leaves some nice lace. Very hoppy aroma with lots of floral hops upfront, some caramel and toffee coming out as it warms and a touch of honey. Medium bodied with a light syrupy coating left on your mouth and a good dose of carbonation especially considering this is a barley wine. Flavor of bread, alcohol, slight honey and perhaps a touch of toffee. I enjoyed it and the 11.4% although noticable was decently masked for such a high ABV.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Gilly’s March ’09

Aroma: Alcohol, Hoppy, Pine, Sweet
Appearance: Cloudy amber color, decently full off-white head
Flavor: Bitterness mixed with sweet, strong alcohol taste that is typical of a barley wine
Palate: Light boddied, not a bad finish, but diminishing
Overall Impression: Solid barley wine style, drinks nicely, not a total standout, but a solid representation of the style and brewer.

12 oz bottle that looks a lot thinner than I expected. Light orange color and it is quite cloudy. Nice aroma, candy and malts. Taste is watery barleywine, bitterness but no hint of the alcohol. This is decent but its just a tad thin for me. I’m always up for trying a new barleywine. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 06-22-2008 04:42:14
