Caramel, chocolate, cofee, bread, pine. Palate had an edge to it like whiskey or strong wine. Body was thick (almost syrupy, but not). Finish was very warming and pleasantly bitter. Went back for more and brewer Sean told us that this batch had been aging for well over a year. (at the PA Microbrewers’ Fest 6/5/04) 5000 (2409), Hardened Liver, Washington, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Apr 20, 2005 Bottle: Caramel, slight haze, white head, dissipates quickly, spotty lacing, light sediment. Fruity nose - candied, caramel malts, slight heat. Young grapefruity citrus bitterness up front, somewhat sticky malts, semi-sweet. 11.4% is very well hidden (bonus point). Very light finish, too light in fact. Decent body, mediocre mouthfeel. Clean, but not big. Thanks Ben!

This brew pours with a clear amber/red body topped by a medium thick head with little lacing. The aroma is slightly sweet and very malty with caramel/toffee notes and a very slight note of mint candy. The flavor is sweet yet bitter and very malty with candy notes and a hint of mint. Full bodied and smooth. dkachur (2373), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Nov 19, 2007 040407 Bottle (hey bockyhorsey!). Pours brown with an orange tint, almost looks a little viscous. Sweet malty aroma, honey, brown sugar, with a bit of spice. Taste is more of that sweetness punctuated with a fairly strong hoppiness. Probably about average for a barleywine, but should be an enjoyable drink. BrewDad (2370), Olympia, Washington, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 22, 2006 [12oz Bottle] Deep dark reddish color. Little to no head. A strong malt character with a high amount of alcohol and a strong strong taste. The caramel flavor was all through out the taste. This was a very very good Barley wine. One of the best. eaglefan538 (2368), Wilmington, Delaware, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 29, 2007 Pours an orange color with some ruby hues, decent initial head, sustained good covering, ok lacing. The aroma was fruity esters (grapes most notable), mint, sweet malts. The flavor was strong fruity esters, mint, vanilla, caramel, earthy/musty notes, finishing with a piney hoppiness to keep things honest, crisp (for a barleywine). Mouthfeel was moderate with light dryness. Nice stuff, darned refreshing for 11.4%. Boutip (2367), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 27, 2005 Bottle: Poured a reddish/orange color ale with a small off-white foamy head with good retention. Aroma of honey, strong malt and bitter hops. Taste is sweet caramel with a full body and a creamy texture. Lots of bitter hops can feel at the end with a warming feeling. Very good barleywine but maybe a tad too sweet for my liking. Walt (2289), Chicago, Illinois, USA
