Caramel malt and citrus rise above the alcohol in the body. Almost cloying. Silphium (2160), Haslett, Michigan, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Feb 25, 2007 1998 vintage from goldtwins. Ruddy orange, sediment-laden body, thin, quickly dissipating off-white head. Big oxidized sherry notes dominated the aroma, in addition to alcohol and caramels. Caramely body with hints of butterscotch, sherry, dusty and cobwebby with prickly alcohol. I’d like to try a fresher vintage to get a feel for how this ages. NYHarvey (2154), New York, New York, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Sep 20, 2005 Courtesy of Slob. Huge fruit mash and malt aroma with hints of bread pudding. Almost apple cider color...warm amber. No head. Soothing malt fore followed by pear, sweet honey dipped bread, pear and apple. Alcohol is more "felt" as a sensation on the tip of the tongue than tasted. zach8270 (2137), Henrietta, New York, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jun 6, 2004 Updated: Dec 10, 2008[draft - 10th Annual PA Microbrewers Fest, Pennsylvania Brewing Co. - Pittsburgh, PA] This was 11.4%? It definitely didn’t taste like it. Poured a deep amber color with a thin white head and good carbonation. Strong aroma of sweet malt and caramel. Quite tasty. The taste was just as tasty... a nice sweet malty flavor with a slight alcohol warm, at that point I still didn’t know it was over 11%, and a creamy finish. cb says that this is like a fine port, so now I’m a bit curious to try a port to do some comparing. jsquire (2123), St. Marys, Ohio, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Sep 2, 2003 Bottle dated 2-19-98. Cloudy orange with a very old sugar nose. Sherry with dark fruit sweetness of molasses, plums, prunes; like a dark and musty old lady. Forboding in its age but mellow. Now I want to try a fresh sample. mkobes (2104), paramus, New Jersey, USA

| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Dec 9, 2009 12oz bottle. 2009? 2/11/09(?) bottling date. "brewed with honey". appearance of honey(!) pouring out of the bottle. thick, rich, dark gold with sediment and no head. aroma is a very sweet caramel and lemon tea. well, first of all, they did a good job hiding the booze. the flavor is sweet with some sweet sugar lemony caramel candy. yellow sweet tart(not tart). my guess is that there’s a lot of residuals hangin’ around. not bad but just not right...maybe some years in the basement will help this one out. thanks for a much needed english style offering! also, a great deal at 7 bucks a 6 pack! | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Aug 31, 2002 Bottled 3/5/2: Creamy, dense foam; adequate retention. Gigantic aroma of fig, honey, alcohol, dirt, plum, candy-like malt, licorice, and Spirits. Microscopic bubbles indicate a quality brew. Flavors are reminiscent of Fuller’s ’99 only less pronounced. Soft mouthfeel. Sharp finish with faint touch of English hop flavor. Flavors of honey, alcohol, and plum noticeable as well. A most noteworthy Barleywine! Thanks, High Gravity.
