1999 version. Pours a deep, hazy orange with a half-finger head. Could smell oranges as soon as I started the pour. The orange is mixed with a subtle bread aroma and some port-like notes once in the glass. Flavor is not as complex as the aroma--very smooth and sweet, with a lasting alcohol tinge. Very good beer.

Courtesy of Slob. Huge fruit mash and malt aroma with hints of bread pudding. Almost apple cider color...warm amber. No head. Soothing malt fore followed by pear, sweet honey dipped bread, pear and apple. Alcohol is more "felt" as a sensation on the tip of the tongue than tasted.

Bottle [12oz] courtesy of TheEpeeist. Bottled 02.16.06. I’ve had this beer for 10 months, brought it to two tastings where we never got to it and now, finally, I’m rating it! It pours a deep, hazy orange-amber with an average size diminishing beige head. Aroma: Oh wow, that’s nice: Malty, sweet and quite fruity along with some wood, caramel, alcohol, brown sugar and hops -- quite a bit going on here. Flavour’s no slouch and is quite tasty: Caramel malt, dark fruit, brown sugar, honey, light grassy hops and some alcohol (yeah there’s alcohol but for 11.4% this goes down pretty easy). Medium bodied, sticky mouthfeel, good amount of carbonation. I’m surprised by the low ratings by a lot of people, I really like this.

Poured a deep orange color with good head, just okay lacing. Aroma was malts and was fruity. Flavor was caramel, pine and earthyness. Fruits mint? 11.4% not sure where that is hide it very very well.

Lots of malt and alcohol dominate the aroma.Pours a deep copper/brown with a medium off white head.Big malt flavor along with hints of alcohol and some hops in the flavor.Full mouthfeel with a lot of alcohol in the finish.

Re-Rate 2/28/08 .... bottled 2/1/08 ... new label and from what I remember a different description ... same name but says "Premium Ale Brewed with Honey" ... amber pour with a thin white head ....sweet malt aroma with light hops in the background ... this is GOOD ...bitter start and finish .... alcohol in the aftertaste, but not overpowering .... medium to thick mouthfeel but not syrupy .... alcohol is more pronounced as it warms ... this has a nice IPA and strong ale balance ... I’m thinking that this probably the same recipe as last year ... still awesome original rating 5/1/2007 (4.2) copper brown...better head than I expected...sweet malty aroma...big body with a hop bite....fruitiness helps to disguise the high alcohol content...what a great beer, much better than some of the other barley wines I’ve tasted

Bottle. Nice smell of hops, sugar, and alcohol. Pours dark amber with a cream colored head that quickly disappears. Solid, tasty beer with less overpowering sugars than you’ll find in a lot of barleywines. I tasted roasted caramel, muted fruits and spices, then a surprising hoppy finish that barleywines often lack. Frightening drinkability and smooth mouthfeel for a brew with this much alchohol, and the aftertaste leans more towards warm hops than booze, so it’d be easy to drink too many of these. I’m an Old Dominion fan and this is one of their best efforts.

Bottled Feb 2009. Pours a rich copper color with no head. Aroma is alcohol and honey. Taste is caramel, honey, alcohol, and a nice citrus hop finish. Heavy mouth feel with moderate carbonation. Definitely a sipper considering the body, alcohol, and smack-you-in-the-face flavor profile. Very enjoyable though.
