| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 29, 2009 [Bottle] Pours reddish-amber with a tiny off-white head. Aroma is fairly sweet, with a good deal of strawberry jam, some alcohol, a touch of lemon and notes of black pepper. Fairly typical for a barley wine, and although very nice, it falls short of being outstanding. The taste has a moderate amount of hop bitterness (perhaps below average considering this is a fresh bottle), along with alcohol again, a strong malt presence, and a faint, unidentifiable fruitiness. The mouthfeel is quite full, and the finish is long (and only marred by the strong alcohol, which hopefully will become toned down with age). After hearing rumors of this beer’s demise, i was hesitant to expect much. However, despite any declines in quality that have happened, it is still an enjoyable, reasonably priced barley wine. vadavid (131), Fredericksburg, Virginia, USA

The aroma is mild; faint floral hops, honey, vanilla. Taste is sweet mailt, caramel. There’s a bit of hop bitterness in the finish. Noticeable alcohol warmth and a dry finish. An enjoyable, if mild, barelywine, sebletitje (1914), Tampa, Florida, USA

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 13/20 | Sep 5, 2004 Bottle: Hazy medium amber w/ a non existant white head. Lacing is thin and sporadic, probably caused by higher alcohol. Aroma is citrusy and piney hops, solventy alcohol, some caramel and toasty malt. Fruitiness is medium, but mostly due to alcohol and hops, not fermentation IMHO. Alcohol gets stronger as it warms. Well balanced for a big beer, and slightly to bitter. Citrursy hops alcohol, moderate caramel malt in the start, bitterness and citrusy hop in the finish and aftertaste. Some solventy alcohol notes as it warms in the finish. Fuller bodied, medium carbonation, well hidden alcohol compared to flavor and aroma, lightly dry m/f. Not a bad barleywine, but definitely young and of need of some aging. I’d like to have another bottle to try in a couple years. OldGrowth (1425), North Carolina, USA

Ripe fruit. Pear, banana, apple, plum. Lite whisky. Caramel and or vanilla. Hazy orangy brown color. Small head that faded to nothing. Minor lacing. Malty flavors. Sour. Like aroma with a little grapefruit. Damn this has a taste to it that I can’t quite place. Medium body, creamy smooth mouthfeel, sweet & Sour finish. Tasty enough, but I’m not diggin it. Little of the rotten fruit thing. ¾ (4999), Colorado, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 23, 2003 Sickly sweet hay and old fruit aroma. It's the usual barley wine smell, and it is nice. Tastes of old fruit, yeast, bread, and hay. Somewhat strong on the lips and throat, but not offensive. Buttery finish, with a pleasent, thick mouthfeel. Thanks Kinz.
