Commercial Description:

As of approximately July 2007 the new ownership of Old Dominion has decided that the actual Oak Barrel version of this beer is not economically feasible. Thus the Oak Barrel Stout that is available at the brewpub is the exact same one that is in bottles.

Aged in used Bourbon Oak barrels, Dominion Oak Barrel Stout is a lovely, creamy dark beer with a hint of chocolate and a distinctive vanilla, oak and bourbon flavor.

Note: aged in bourbon barrels and only available at the brewpub at the brewery.

On tap at the brewpub, RBSG 2006. VERY dark brown, almost black, with a thin brown head. Nose of espresso and nuts, traces of vanilla. VERY rich, with flavors of smoked coffee, light tobacco, sweet malt and vanilla. Slight bourbon notes. Satiny smooth mouthfeel, and just a touch of smoky, burnt coffee and hop bitter in the finish. Smoother and much more complex than it’s bottled brother.

An extremely good sweet stout. At first, it tastes a bit like a Guinness, but then that gives way to a sweet aftertaste (you can really taste the vanilla and bourbon flavors). Points off on Overall because you’ve got to be in Virginia to get this. REALLY looking forward to the bottles I picked up.

On tap at Dominion (duh). Pours a deep black with small forma head that lasts during the entire tasting. Aroma is roasted and sweet. There are some definite hints of bourbon but it doesn’t overwhelm the flavor. Lots of roasted malt flavor with hints of bourbon at the end. Very easy to drink. I’d like to see a bit more body in the stout.

Black with a good head. Vanilla and a bit of espresso. Lightly creamy mouthfeel. Slight acidity in the bad. This is good, but I always imagined it would be better after hearing all the hype. Better than the bottle though.

Draft @ the BP. Really didn’t taste a big difference in this version and the bottled version. Nonetheless, a good, drinkable, session version of the style.

Dulles Airport Brew Pub on a 5 hour layover: Dark black with a tan head. Looked like it had some nitrous action to it. Malty aroma with a good oak hint. Creamy malty flavor with a little chocolate sprinkled in. Also now that I think about it you can get a good bourbon hint to it. The head is very good to swish around the mouth for awhile and it leaves a nice impression on your palate. Definitely was a high point of my layover.

On tap. Poures a deep brown with a deep tan head that reminds me of guinness because of its creaminess. Aroma was of roasted malt and coffee with chocolae and vanilla. Flavor was roasted malts and chocolate with some smokeyness and vanilla. Mouth was very creamy and enjoyable. A real nice stout.
