Commercial Description:

As of approximately July 2007 the new ownership of Old Dominion has decided that the actual Oak Barrel version of this beer is not economically feasible. Thus the Oak Barrel Stout that is available at the brewpub is the exact same one that is in bottles.

Aged in used Bourbon Oak barrels, Dominion Oak Barrel Stout is a lovely, creamy dark beer with a hint of chocolate and a distinctive vanilla, oak and bourbon flavor.

Note: aged in bourbon barrels and only available at the brewpub at the brewery.

[growler at RBSG] Dark coca-cola with a yellowish ring and a wispy film. The aroma is bourbon with vanilla oakiness and some notes of toast and coffee. The flavour was surprisingly watery with hazlenut and toasty malt flavours and low bittering that is, nonetheless, in good balance with the sweetness. Medium body (though was expecting a full body) with moderate carbonation. This beer was fairly subdued but still very good.

A growler from the brewpub in Ashburn. Pours black with a two-finger tan head. Nice lacing. Aroma of roasted malts, vanilla, and wood. A lot like the bottled version, but better. The vanilla is subtler.

07.08.05 RBSG Black with big tan head. Big diacetyl aromas, cream, coffee, milk chocolate. Flavor follows suit plus it’s quite plummy and adds prune and raisin. Very nice. Full and smooth. Light spice emerges.

Pour is black with no head...smell was vanilla and oak and far from intoxicating...taste was intense wood and mild cocoa...quite watery with a quick finish...

Served from a gowler, a tan head sits atop a mostly dark brown body. Heavy butter in the nose, really covering up everything else that might be down there. Seems to be another bourbon aged beer that produces a byproduct butter scent. Have to say it has a nasty chalky butter flavor, but it’s quite smooth on the palate. Not impressed. Is there something wrong with this growler? If it’s true I’ll have to take down this rating.

RBSG 2005: Poured black with a moderate brown head. Big butter aroma, even after sitting for 30 minutes. Little roasted malt, just butter. Nothing here. I hope this isn’t normal.

RBSG 05, growler. Dark brown color with a ring of light brown lace. Aroma of wood, chocolate and roasted malt. Very good, subtle flavor of wood, roasted malt and chocolate. Light to medium body, liquorous texture. soft carbonation.

Draught on 6/25/05: Opaque black body with a medium, creamy tan head that lasts throughout the drinking. Aroma: roasted malts, light coffee, vanilla, oak, with a very restrained and barely percievable bourbon scent(a good thing). Taste: Roasted malt, chocolate, coffee and vanilla beans blend together seamlessly, with the bourbon flavors hardly noticable but present, the oak barrel is tasted throughout and adds a nice roundness to the already smooth beer. Lightly sweet, full bodied, with a creamy texture and mild carbonation.
