Dark brown, almost black with some ruby highlights at the bottom of my Unibroue glass. Aroma: Roast and vanilla, with some chocolate, light molasses and a touch of oak. Taste is roast, light chocolate, a moderate amount of vanilla, light caramel and a touch of chocolate and plum. Oak is there but not very discernable. The oak and vanilla give it a butterscotch flavor that is actually close to diacetyl. Body is on the light side side,a bit watery but not too bad considering it’s ABV. Gets a bit tart in the finish. Overall I would say this is pretty decent. Thanks Ethan. MrChopin (681), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | May 10, 2008 brown body with small white head that goes quickly, leaving almost no lacing. Roasts dominant in the nose with hints of dark fruit Taste has extreme roast, so roasty that it’s wood-tasting. Palate is moderately thin and a little lifeless. Pretty one-sided in roast, maybe with a little fruit.

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 7, 2008 Thanks emacgee. This is a very solid brew. Pours black with a nice tan head. Aroma is surprisingly sweet, smells like vanilla, choc and caramel with a slight oak in the background. Taste is very smooth, more vanilla and a slight licorice taste. Milky smooth on the palate with a very sweet vanilla finish. vadavid (131), Fredericksburg, Virginia, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 6, 2008 This beer pours jet black with a robust beige head. Some lacing is left behind as the head slowly drops. The aroma is that of dark chocolate and roasted malt, with faint vanilla notes. The flavor has roasted malts and oak, with some licorice. As the beer warms a slight smokiness comes out. The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy. There’s a nice lingering hop bitterness, but none of the expresso astringency that one finds in some stouts. This is one goes down easily, perhaps too easily. However, at just 5.2% ABV that’s not too much of an issue. tytoanderso (1387), St. Louis Park, Minnesota, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Apr 18, 2008 12oz bottle. Lush aroma. Melted mix of bittersweet and milk chocolate, vanilla, slightly charred, wet wood, red liquorice and a bag of freshly roasted coffee beans. Pours dark, nearly opaque brown with a dark khaki head. Toasted (but not charred) malt, dry wood and dry vanilla dominate the flavor. Too much of the rich aroma is lost to a dry graininess on the palate. Medium mouth feel with a very average, dry, malty finish. Thanks David! dchmela (1458), Orlando, Florida, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Apr 16, 2008 Thanks to oldstylecubfan for this. 03/08 bottle. Pours blackish red with a thick tan head. The aroma is vanilla, dry coffee, roasted grain and a hint of oak barrel. Taste is dry coffee stout like with hints of vanilla and roasted grain. Finishes a little dry. Tasty stout. I think I would have liked to have seen a little more oak influence, though. puzzl (2648), New York, New York, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 15, 2008 Updated: Apr 16, 2008Bottle, 2 years old. Vanilla beans dominate this one, in both aroma and flavor, but its quite enjoyable. A bit lactic, much like a milk stout, with only a touch of real oak noticable. Its clear this isn’t actually barrel aged. Very drinkable. A damn good beer. Has held up surprisingly well for its age and low alcohol content. Magjayran (1379), Durham, North Carolina, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 2/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Apr 14, 2008 Not quite opaque. This one looks very flat. Small film of a white head and no lacing. I’m picking up some coffee and a faint butterscotch note. The oak is very strong and this one and the vanilla beans are prominent. That’s not a bad thing since I don’t think there’s too much to like about the base stout. Easily drinkable and easily forgettable.
