I have had this for a while now and since I’m trying to clear some cellar space decided to crack it open. The other two Old Dominion beers I’ve tried were solid releases. This one turned out to be in the same camp. It does not stand out as exceptional but there are not many flaws to speak of.
Aroma / Appearance - The short lived beige head receded into the dark red body after about thirty seconds. The nose was pretty complex for a stout - plums, raisins, smoke and anise. Cocoa butter blends in with the vanilla beans and wood characteristics that must come from the barrel aging.
Flavor / Palate - Bitter dark chocolate, smoke and thick brownies immediately coat the mouth. Plums and peaches come next before a watery charcoal finish. The mouthfeel is fluid and loose. It was not as complex as the nose suggested but still very satisfying. The alcohol is hidden well and does not come out until the very end. efrumtheidiot (190), Maryland, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Oct 3, 2007 pours deep brown with a frothy off-white head. malt aroma with a little coffee, caramel, faint oak woodiness, and a little nut. tastes of coffee, a little more oak, vanilla, and a touch of caramel. quite carbonated, very bubbly. mouthfeel was a little on the thin side. flavors are a little weak for my taste. was a slight disappointment, but not bad overall. judging from other reviews, however, i might have just gotten a crummy batch. i wouldn’t feel bad giving this one a second chance at some point. grandet (486), Scranton, Pennsylvania, USA

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 28, 2007 Surprisingly good. Rich dark color, on the thin side, but a nice frothy head. Sweet malty aroma with hints of smokiness. Flavor is somewhat sweet with tones of chocolate, lots of malt, and some slight oak notes. Finishes with some vanilla tones and a lightly bitter end. A little thin and a little too weak, but quite good and for the price it cant be beat. BDR (2168), Roseville, Minnesota, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Sep 27, 2007 Superb chocolate nose with just the faintest oaky edge. Dark brown body almost black with tan head. Intense chocolate body with a little oak and sour cherry leading to a dry finish. cnik (1), USA does not count | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Sep 24, 2007 Rich aroma, and the taste (due to the toasted oak) is very similar to a fine whiskey.
Stout... but not too heavy nor too watery.
This beer tops my lists of favorites. joebrew (608), Farewell Minny; Hello Puyallup, Washington, USA

Flavor is smoky, wheat, slight anise, oak, coffee. Mellow flavor, but very drinkable. I’m seemingly partial to smoky beers.
