A very pleasant sour chocolate smell, not as strong or pronounced as I’d like, but still an inviting aroma. It’s pitch black with a light tan head, actually a smaller head than expected. This is a really tasty stout, but it’s not the same as the brewpub version. I’ll always remember years ago when the brewmaster at Dominion told me if he could come up with a way to bottle their Oak Barrel Stout, he’d retire a rich happy man. Instead he made a beer that tastes kinda similar. Good, solid stout, but it’s not the same. I look forward to getting back to the brewpub to try the real thing again. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 18/20 | Aug 5, 2007 Rerate - 1/2007 - Deep brown, almost black pour with nice tan foamy head and lacing. Aroma was faint, chocolate and coffee. Mouthfeel was also not as cream as some of the other high end stouts, but the flavor is fantastic. Rich deep coffee, chocolate, vanilla and oak. Perfect balance of sweetness and a slightly bitter finish to round it out. Darned good jarspag (598), Los Angeles, California, USA

The name got me excited - the appearance and the 35 degree pour definitely didn’t. Not much flavor to brag about here - thin thin thin, just too thin. Watery and lacking... rdawson321 (145), USA

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jul 7, 2007 Thin light brown head of varying size bubbles. Reduces kind of quickly. Vanilla, milk chocolate and sweet malts. I am not really getting any of the oak in the aroma. Color is a very dark brown. Brew is lively in the mouth with a good helping of roasted grains, dry bitter coffee, a hint of vanilla again and maybe a little bit of oaky tartness. Very minimal though. Light to medium bodied. Finishes dry and bitter with a lingering roasted grainy flavor. A decent stout. Thanks to etowneraser for this one. Brew bottled Nov 2, 2006.

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jul 2, 2007 Updated: Jan 18, 2009Bottled 04-13-07. Opaque chocolate-black with a small, not-so-lasting head. Aroma is spicy, woody smoke with a touch of metallic, sweetened coffee. Initial flavor is not-to-sweet, campfire-toasted marshmallow with vanilla and light oak. Turns to a rich peppery, earthy and woody, vanilla ice cream float. Palate is a little light for a stout, but that’s OK.
