In mouth the body was very thin and a bit lactic. Not very tasty with milk-chocolate, some vanilla and some soy sauce. Even the roasted malts were barely noticeable. Very light. Slightly below average stout. I didn’t notice any of the flavours associated with oak barrels. Given its flavour spectrum you’d think it spent more time in pasteurization tanks rather than in oak barrels. jason (1623), Easton, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Nov 12, 2006 Bottle. A very nice dark pour with a thin head that stays. Good creamy taste too it with a well balanced malt vs. hop body. Good stout, very smooth. weeare138 (936), Collegeville, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 11, 2006 Appears a pitch, opaque black with only a dark, caramel toned brown yielding any light at the very bottom of the glass. A small tan head fades into a scattered cap and collar. Spotty lacing is left around the glass but slides back into the brew.
Smell is of dusty cocoa, caramel, vanilla, and oak. Perhaps there is a touch of creaminess as well.
Taste is of the mentioned aromas that leads to a balanced stout that seems sweet and not really roasty like many other stouts.
Mouthfeel is medium-full bodied with light oak tannins complimenting the cocoa, caramel, and vanilla flavors that run along the palate but don’t linger. Slightly sweet up front with a gentle, tannic, bitter end that is very soft, smooth, mildly slick, and semi-dry. Really nice IMO.
A nice drinking stout. That 5.2 goes down like nothing. kenb (1100), Oregon, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 11, 2006 12 OZ bottle from slob (Thanks!). I don’t get much from the nose on this one. Maybe some vanilla and a little chocolate. Not much in the way of flavor either. I am shocked...i thought this would be one of those oak/bourbon overkill beers. Instead it is a nice easy drinking stout, the chocolate/coffee/oak flavors are there but are all very balanced and subtle. VERY easy drinking. Medium body. Well carbonated. Nice session beer.
