Aroma: Big roasted malt aroma with some coffee and chocolate notes. Vanilla stands out in a big way and smells delicious. Strong woodiness and a touch of smoke. Appearance: Dark black with a thick, creamy medium tan head. Great lacing. Flavor: There’s alot of roasted malt flavors here, but the vanilla steals the show. Works really well with the chocolate, coffee, and light caramel from the malts. Wood flavor stands out as well. Tastes almost like a toothpick. A subtle smokiness and a touch of floral hop flavor rounds it all out. Palate: Full bodied and very chewy. Carbonation was soft and pleasant. Overall: I’m usually not the biggest fan of Nitro’d beers, but this one was awesome. The vanilla and oak flavors are strong, but not overbearing and worked well with all the other great flavors the beer had. BenDover (128), Texas, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Sep 19, 2006 Poured very dark, looks black until I hold it up to the light, then a bit red. Dense head, dark orange/tan. Aroma is faint roasted malt, not very strong. Taste reminds me of a chocolate shake, with a bit of a roasted/smokey start to it but a sweet finish. My very favorite stout. DTB (51), South Philly, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 10/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Sep 15, 2006 This beer came dark black with a hint of purple when held up to the light. The head was smooth and ultra-creamy.
Smelled of vanilla, roasted marshmallows and dark chocolate.
Wow! Initially it tasted of creamy milk and then picks up notes of dark creamy chocolate, cherries and vanilla. There’s also a slight dry oak smokiness lingering in the background. Absolutely amazing!
The mouth feel was thin and flat due to the nitro. This just accented the cream and milk-like nature of this beer.
This would be an ultimately drinkable beer if it wasn’t so sweet. There are some knock-out flavors going on here, but the sweetness is a bit limiting. Nice beer!
Average in the bottle, superb on nitro-tap! swischeze (2), USA does not count | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 19/20 | Sep 3, 2006 Very attractive looking beer, with a tan head. I can get a very little vanilla but you have to be looking for it. beerbill (1971), Laurel, New York, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Aug 23, 2006 12 oz. bottle. Poured an opaque black with a light tan head that disappeared fairly quickly. Aroma of chocolate and roasted malt were present but light for a stout. The flavor I thought was a bit on the light side as well. I did not get any of the vanilla or the oak in the aroma or the flavor. Mouthfeel was a bit watery. Drinkable but not memorable. kimcgolf (835), Dacula, Georgia, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Aug 20, 2006 Poured to a typical stout opaque-black, with thick tan head that lingers and then leaves good lacing. I couldn’t detect much aroma, but the flavor was a tasty mix of vanilla with a hint of malty chocolate. Finish was very smooth, yet not too sweet. I generally don’t consider stouts for session beers, but could actually see drinking several of these over a few hours. A darn good beer. Beerdedone (1885), Croydon, Pennsylvania, USA
