Commercial Description:
Dominion Oak Barrel Stout is rich and smooth, a draught brew so popular at our Brewup that we found a way to bottle it for a wider audience. We combine seven different malts and two hops to create a delicious stout, that we dry-hop with fresh vanilla beans and toasted oak to finish our little treasure. The result is a stout that has the bourbon barrel flavor we all enjoy, and hope you will to.

Note: made with oak chips and vanilla beans, not aged in barrels. Available bottled and draft outside of the brewpub.

Rich flavor. Vanilla and oak aroma and flavor with a bit of a roasted coffee flavor. Not too heavy and has a nice finish. I just had it again after some time and can only imagine that my palate has increased since I had this 16 months ago.

Funny appearance. It looks dark brown but there’s not a whole lot of light getting through regardless. The aroma mixed oak, vanilla and coffee. Very sweet flavour with lots of vanilla and oak, to the point where it overwhelms the stout character it ought to have. Those coffee notes go so far back in the background and you won’t find much hop here at all. A bit unbalanced but okay if vanilla is your thing.

From the bottle. Pours very dark with a thin off-white head. Intense smoky aroma of roasted coffee lingers with the glass. Flavors of chocolate and toffee with a bit of hazelnut/vanilla towards the end of the glass. Palate isn’t heavy but very creamy with a bit of a hop finish.

VERY dark brown, almost black, with a thin brown head. Nose of roasted coffee and nuts, traces of vanilla. VERY rich, with flavors of smoked coffee, light tobacco, sweet malt and vanilla. Malted milkballs! Very tasty, although a bit heavy. Satiny smooth mouthfeel, and just a touch of smoky, burnt coffee and hop bitter in the finish. Does not wane, true to the last sip. What an interesting VA porter! Proud to be a Virginian!

from the bottle (06/09/05) a deep brown/black body with a medium-tan head. smells chocolate and malty. tastes of chocolate, malt, coffee and vanilla. the consistency on the palate is like syrup except lighter and more fluid. a really interesting texture thats hard to describe. slightly sweet aftertaste. i think its great.

I went halfsies on this one. Mild is the overall impression on the head, flavor, and palate. Noting overwhelmed me at all. There is a slight bitter-sweet placement on tongue and swallow, but the sensation is pleasant just not lasting nor memorable.
