afireinside96 (409), Mountville, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 4, 2008 Bottled on 12/13/07. Pours very dark brown with a thin beige head. Smells like a vanilla latte with maybe a hint of whiskey. Roasted bitterness and coffee are evident at first, a larger sip reveals a bit of oak character. It is a shame some of that vanilla doesn’t come through in the flavor. Feels lightly astringent and bitter. Pretty good.
FatTony (110), Augusta, Georgia, USA Aug 22, 2008 12 ounce bottle- poured out a deep brown with a red tint. Not much of a head to speak of. The aroma was also a little lacking, very faint smokey nose. Taste was excellent, the vanilla and oak flavors readily discern-able. Palate was just a little thin. All-in-all, an excellent drinkable stout. iowaherkeye (1382), rocking podunk Marengo!, Iowa, USA Aug 21, 2008 12oz bottled on 031008 from TURDFERGUSON, thank you Sam! Black with a small tan head, low retention.Aroma of chocolate-covered coffee beans up front with a little oaky vanilla in the background. Flavor was not near as sweet (did I mention the sweet chocolate in the aroma?) with roasted malts and coffee showing up quite a bit stronger. Oak comes right after the swallow, and into a semi-dry slightly charred roasty finish, bitterness peaking at a 3. Silky mouthfeel with some low prickly carbonation. Burps the sweetness I got from the aroma. Pretty nice beer. sinkr (129), Lusby, Maryland, USA Aug 20, 2008 Draft->pint: Pours a thick, dark brown head atop a pitch black body. Aroma is of chocolate, and vanilla together, but as well a creaminess that is undescribable. Flavor’s duration is medium-to-long, finishes like milk, and is pure heaven in a cup to my palate. the_federalist (198), Jonesboro, Arkansas, USA Aug 18, 2008 Bottle. Pours a dark brown with a medium but quickly diminishing cocoa colored head. Aroma is really nice. The roasted notes combine with the oak and vanilla for really well rounded nose. Flavor is moderately sweet, but with enough pungency to still remain relatively dry in the finish. The oak and vanilla linger on the palate. A fine stout. Heathen (502), Riverside, New Jersey, USA Aug 11, 2008 THOUGHTS: A truly unique beer. I expected this to be a huge alcohol bomb when I saw "oak" on the label. But this is great to have all those flavors we usually only see in hight ABV beers in an easy drinking lower ABV beer. i was getting a little bored with rating beer, but beers like this keep it exciting.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a dark brown that looked black in the glass with slight red highlights and a small, tan head that mostly diminished and left virtually no lacing. The aroma was light cereal, roasted, and toffee malt, more molasses malt, toffee, vanilla, cola, slight bourbon and ever so slight wood. The initial flavor was lightly sweet, acidic and bitter; while the finish was moderately sweet and bitter, lightly acidic and sour with a short duration. There was vanilla, roasted malt wood and coffee. The medium body was oily with fizzy carbonation and a light astringent finish.
