| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 20, 2004 Updated: Oct 22, 2005Pours a deep amber red with a thick, creamy off-white head. Has a ton of caramel/kilned malts in the nose with along with plenty of Casade.. Flavor has beautiful blast of toasted malt and caramel then gives way to notes of toffee, munich malt, cascade/euro hops. Moderately sweet with assertive (but not harsh) hop bitterness. Medium bodied with a smooth, creamy texture and lively carbonation. Great lacing and head retention. Although this beer has received good ratings, it kind of gets lost in the mix between the fantastic New River and Tuppers Hop Pocket Ale. Don’t pass on this one, it’s quite good. | 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 3/5 | 9/20 | Jan 14, 2004 Pours a nice deep clear copper color and is topped by a two inch thick light tan head that is made up of largish sized bubbles. The aroma is buttery and slightly spicy from the hops that are used. Up front it is fairly clean tasting, the finish is mostly dominated by a butteryness that is most likely form diacetyl. This beer is fairly mild in the hop department.
This would be a pretty nice drinking pale ale if not for the diacetyl that comes to dominate this beer. The butter flavor is not out of control but it is just a bit too much for my liking. Though it is drinkable, and has a certain spiciness to it, which seems to be part of the hop character. happy4hops (369), Bel Air, Maryland, USA
