The Summer Wheat varies year-to-year. The back label should state what style it is, so make sure you rate the correct style!

Dark and rich in color, yet light and satisfying.

11-Apr-08 (12 oz bottle, Bottled 15-May-05: Obtained 13-Jul-06 in trade with gputty, thanks Geoff!) Nothing special when I first had it a few years ago, but after two additional years, this beer has picked up a slight earthiness, and frankly, this is the only thing that gives this beer any character. The fact that this was being marketed as a summer wheat beer that according to the back label is "light, refreshing and easy to drink" is quite telling. The thin flavor and body certainly give an overall impression of an easy-drinking, summery beer rather than a serious attempt at an authentic dunkelweizen. In fact, this beer tastes like a toastier version of a generic American-style hefeweizen. Generic wheat flavors are light on the entry, but mildly sweet banana soon joins in to make the beer slightly more interesting. A little sesame and background breadiness emerge in the dry finish. Body is thin and watery. Not surprisingly for a twist-off cap, the carbonation is low, so the beer is a bit on the flat side, but it’s still acceptable. The nose is wheaty, but lacks the spice or fruity esters of the better, more authentic dunkelweizens. Amber in color and fairly cloudy, even though a lot of sediment remained in the bottle. Small, wispy head is the result of low carbonation from aging and can’t be held against the beer. Overall, this isn’t very impressive. Granted, it was brewed almost three years ago so the flavor profile has changed (to my tastes, seemingly for the better). But it’s not difficult to look beyond the mild earthiness that has set in and find a thin, characterless, dark wheat beer intended for mindless summer quaffing.

Caramel orange in color with a grayish tan head. Aroma is a tumble into catastrophes - melting toffee runs amuck with hints of allspice and cotton dryer sheets. Caramel laden hazelnuts, starch spray and linen sheets do nothing to further entice the nose. Flavor elicits an audible "boo" from said rater, with lacking chocolate qualities and a pinch of bleached cocoa powder. Gradual carbonation defeats the slackened caramel coffee creamer. Allspice and aged nutmeg add numbed spicing while grahams with melted caramel cubes drizzled over them do little other than mimic maple and brown sugar oatmeal mush. Quite a bitch slap to Bavaria.

12 oz bottle dated 05/16/05. Murky orange-brown pour, off white head. Toasty caramel nose, some underlying spiciness I can’t quite make out. Lightly spiced flavor, wheaty, a bit toasty. Very light overall.

Appearance is a dingy, brownish amber with a minimal head; aroma is sweet, grainy, with a little bit of fruit in the background. Flavor is nice, of fruit (banana and citrus), yeast and a bit of a tart character that is tough to describe. It almost stings a little, but it’s a good sting. It is much thinner than expected, however, and does not develop with the heavy sweetness that I expected.

A nice but not overly impressive dunkelweizen. Poured a dark caramelly color with a normal head that stayed as a thin covering for the duration of the drink. The aroma was caramel like with some spices detectable. Flavor was much of the same, but the caramel covered the banana and citrus fruity flavors I was hoping for more of.

The beer pours a hazy orange with a small white head. The head is short lasting with no lacing. Initially the nose is greeted with a slight spicy aroma and after a few sniffs one can detect some caramel. The flavor is light with some fruitiness.

Bottle. Dark hazy orange color. Fruity aroma, and a flavor of fruit, caramel, and wheat. Slight dry finish. I didn’t think it was too bad.

Dark orange colored, small off-white head. Fruit and herb aroma, tones of wheat. Thin flavor of fruit and yeast, watery and uninteresting. Sugary notes.
