Commercial Description:
Created specially for Mount Hood Meadows’ 40th anniversary in 2007, Alpenbrew features a beautifully nutty maltiness, buoyed by spicy/herbal hops and fruitiness from the yeast. Look for this one at the Alpenstube, The Finish Line and the Mazot up on the slopes this winter, and at a select number of wholesale accounts. Brewed with organic Pilsner and Dark Munich malt; Newport, Perle and Mount Hood hops. 5.0% ABV, 40 BU

Tap at the brewpub. Pours a light golden with a small, tight head and minimal lacing. Aroma is bread, floral and light lemon citrus hops. Flavor is lemon, honey, bread and a strange sour note. I think this is the only beer I’ve had from Double Mountain that I really didn’t enjoy at all.

Tap at the Lucky Lab Beer Hall. Pours medium amber with an off-white head. Sweet pale fruit aroma. Medium body. Mild carbonation. Flavor is lightly cooked dark fruit. Quite delicious. Sweet/bitter/fruity finish. Kind of fun.

On tap at Double Mountain Hood River. Pours out a hazy apple juice topped with a white head. Aroma was of malts and a dirty sock odder. I don’t think that is suck a good smell. Taste was OK though. A good rich bread malt along with some sweetness and as always for me I seem to pick up a little wood on the ESB’s for some odd reason.

Pours gold with a compact white head. Few lacings. Aroma is bready with some floral hops. Taste is bread, yeast, lemon, and bitter earthy hops. The overall effect was a sour lemon hoppy beer. Not much like any ESB I’ve had before. I did finish the glass but was tempted to have and IRA or Hop Lava about half way through. Maybe this was an old batch or I was served the wrong beer.

On tap at Double Mountain in Hood River. Color was a murky, dark gold color. Aroma was light with bread, earth and apples. Flavor was of bread, fruit and spice. A bit dry and earthy in the finish. Drinkable beer.

On tap @ Apizza Scholls, while awaiting my bacon pizza. Hazy orange-brown color, thick pillow of stark white head. Mild grassy hop character, light biscuity malt notes. Mild overall, but serves its purpose.

Tap @ Their Taproom... Poured cloudy golden/orange with a white head. Faint aroma that was close to absent. Dry palate and some hop bitterness upfront. A little yeasty before the malt came into play. I think the Pilsner and Munich malts created wonderful earthy and grassy undertones in the finish.

Orange amber pour with a smooth white head. Big floral nose, citrus and softly spicy hops over a warm caramel malt base. Really well balanced, not overly bitter, just floral and fruity with a good crisp finish. Not sure it is an ESB, I didn’t quiet get that toasty malt flavor, more a big hopped American Pale.
