Commercial Description:
Scratch #20 has been dubbed Apollo Imperial Ale because of our experimentation with a new hop variety. Apollo hops are high alpha acid with an intense aroma. Married with other high alpha hops, with almost two pounds of hops added per barrel produced, AIA has an intense staying power in the back of the throat. After a long discussion between Chris, John and the brewers, they dubbed this hop flavor stinky grapefruit with a hint of perfume. The dark color might lead you to believe the some malt may shine through; but no, the hops are the true player in this ale. Scratch #20 serves a dual purpose since it will also appear as The Drafting Room’s Anniversary Ale for 2009. We brewed a bit more to serve the brewery and The Drafting Room, but get it while when you see it.

Thanks to Rich for the bottle (as Scratch 20). Poured clear reddish-orange with a creamy, well-retained cap of off-white head. The aroma picked up fresh, bright oranges and floral notes over a sweet caramel and bready base.. a pinch of peppery warmth on the back of the nose. The flavor found pale malts, honey, and a bit of caramel surrounded by spicy and heavy bitterness (oranges, peppery pine, and perfume rocked it hard).. peppery and bitter well beyond the finish.. quite well balanced. Medium-bodied with moderate carbonation.. bitterness was a touch scratchy, which worked well.. I liked this one much.

Bottle via trade thanks to KnightRider on BA, labeled as "Troegs Scratch 20." Pours a slightly hazy amber color with a one-finger off-white head and good lacing. Aroma is citrusy hops - the description of "stinky grapefruit" fits it well - and just a hint of caramel malt. Flavor is lots of grapefruity and floral hops, resin, and some caramel malt. Age has apparently not harmed this beer much - it’s still very good and hoppy. Body is medium and palate is resinous with prickly carbonation. Another good one from Troegs, makes me proud of my hometown brewers.

Big thanks to machfive55. Murky orange pour, think unfiltered apple cider, with moderate beige head, sticky lacing. Strong grapefruit hops aroma, a bit of ginger as well. On the flavor, the citric, piney hops aromatics merge and harmonize with the malt’s cider and light caramel flavors. On the finish, there’s a blend of floral, fruity, and musty elements that linger over the lasting hops bitterness. I like it, but I would understand if someone didn’t go in for the mustiness. Crisp. lively palate, medium body. A fine IPA.

Scratch 20-2009 thanks to bu11zeye. Pours with a fading white head over a hazed amber body. Aroma of floral and herbal hops; slightly dank. Taste is dank, resinous and piney hops. Light bubbles and a dry mouthfeel.

Bottle courtesy of bu11zeye. Hazy orange yellow pour. Soured hops on the nose with other natural hops. Taste has a fair mix of hops and solid flavor. Finish is dry and soapy. Decent finish for a well hopped beer.
