Commercial Description:
Scratch #20 has been dubbed Apollo Imperial Ale because of our experimentation with a new hop variety. Apollo hops are high alpha acid with an intense aroma. Married with other high alpha hops, with almost two pounds of hops added per barrel produced, AIA has an intense staying power in the back of the throat. After a long discussion between Chris, John and the brewers, they dubbed this hop flavor stinky grapefruit with a hint of perfume. The dark color might lead you to believe the some malt may shine through; but no, the hops are the true player in this ale. Scratch #20 serves a dual purpose since it will also appear as The Drafting Room’s Anniversary Ale for 2009. We brewed a bit more to serve the brewery and The Drafting Room, but get it while when you see it.

Thanks to FooFaa for throwing this want in with my growler for growling. Bottle poured into a snifter produced a two finger white head that trailed of to a nice lace. The body of the brew was a cloudy apricot in color. I got a nice citrus hoppy aroma from the glass as I put it to my lips. Sweet malts then followed by a nice citrus bitter with a slight pine flavor in the finish. A great medium feel in my mouth with great carbonation This is a great brew and an easy to drink DIPA. Finished the glass with no problem and left wanting for more. Great job Tröegs another fine scratch brew

bottle. pours a dark amber orange with a fluffy medium offwhite head. leaves some spotty lace on the glass. aroma of pineapple, melon, caramel, grapefruit, and a little booze. flavor is a big smack of pine up front, with some grapefruit, tangerines, and some bready, nutty, caramel malt backing. nice body. This was pretty damn good. Like a doughy caramel with a some spruce and pineapple. I know that doesn’t sound very good, but it worked. this was a great beer. awesome balance as well.

Bottle courtesy of machfive55. Thanks Rich. Hazy amber pour with a thin ring of foam. Apparently apollo hops smell a lot like cascades, only more intense. Lots of pungent grapefruit aroma, a little caramel, and a hint of grass. Bitterness is fairly intense and doesn’t leave a lot of room for subtlety. Grapefruit and caramel stand out behind the bitterness. Lasting resinous finish. Not bad but could use a little refinement.

( 12oz bottle labeled Tröegs Scratch 20 thanks to bu11zeye) Pours cloudy orange with oily bubbles. Nose of tropica hops, bready and yeast. Taste oily grapefruit, esters, fruity with a nice linger. This is well balanced.

Not quite retired at The Drafting Room in Spring House. Served in a 14oz goblet on tap. This IPA has a distinctive reddish color to it, and a nearly fruity component to the hop flavor. Not much head but a fine taste and hop presence--115 IBUs according to their description. Get it while there’s still some left.
