Commercial Description:
Bishop Bob's Holy Smoke This beer is a Bamberg-style Rauchbier. The town of Bamberg in Germany originated the style of smoked beers. These beers are made with a dose of smoked barley. Our recipe relies on a light bock recipe for its base and contains about 20% imported smoked barley. The noble German hops are used to balance the taste into a unique beer drinking experience.

On tap @ the brew pub: Pours a clear copper color with a light tan head. Aroma, smoky and malty. Flavor, smoky, peaty, some caramel, light chocolate hints, and some roasted notes, the smoke was quite well balanced.

On tap at Dragonmead. 3-13-09. Poured dark brown with light amber hues. Smelled of malt and campfire. Tasted very light malty, lots of hardwood smke, even a little cask-aged. Light body and easy drinkability. I might mix this beer and the jalapeno beer together next time and see what happens.

Big thanks to my sister Lori for sending down a growler of this. My sister ROCKS! Pours out amber with gold edges and full tan head. The aroma has malts, chocolate, bacon and a light dash of bandaid. The taste has modest levels of malt and a bit of chocolate here and there. Midway the smoke shows up as the beer thins out creating an earthy – bacony – slightly rubbery bandiad-y mélange of flavor notes. It is a decent enough beer and the smoke certainly doesn’t overwhelm (for most I’m guessing that’s a good thing).

Draft... Clear, very dark, crimson lager with a small, creamy, khaki head. Hickory, campfire smoke aroma. Perfectly balanced flavor with lots of BBQ smoke. Low residual sweetness and light bitterness. Medium-bodied and thin with modest carbonation.

On tap at the brewery. Dark brown color with a firm tan head. Smoked malts aroma but it was very subdued. The smoke was evident in the taste, but again it was subtle. Along with the smoked malts, there was a hint of sweetness that came out in the end. This would be a good starter for someone who has not had any smoked beers.

On tap: Big smokey aroma much like a campfire. It’s a dark orangish-brown with some transparency and a small off-white head. The flavor starts with some faint sweetness (chocolate?) that quickly fades to a moderate smoked cheese finsih.

On tap at the Dragonmead Brew Pub. Poured a deeper brown color with a small sized off white head. Aromas of some smoked meat and peaty. Tastes of smoked meat, peat, and some caramel. The smoke was there but not strong.
