Above average with a nice taste & a good body. Good ale but lacking in authority.

Aroma is rich with hops, alcohol, butter, and scotch. Served in a wine glass, the color is a rich, deep red there is no head. First sip: the hops are a tad overdone for style, but they work very well in this brew. A lingering sweetness from the malt. Alcohol (9.6% this batch) is not detectable. A warming and wonderful winter beer.

On tap at the Dragonmead Brew Pub. Poured a medium amber color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of caramel, earthy, citrus, and dome fruitiness. Tastes of caramel, toffee, citrus, and fruity. Softer and smooth body with the alcohol content well hidden. Lacing left on the glass.

Courtesy IBrew2or3’s sister. Dave had nothing to do with this at all. Pours a clear copper amber, with a small swirly light head. Smells of some caramel, bready yeast, and some dark fruit. The flavor is more on the sweeter, fruity side, with a good heat bitterness to it. Decent barley wine, pretty nice balance to it with some good flavor.

Thanks again to Ibrew2or3 ’s sister for the growler. Poured a light copper color with a thin even white head. Earthy hops, some alcohol, light spicy caramel aroma. Subdued but pleasant taste, both hops and malt apparent along with a dose of alcohol. Peppery finish. Nice and balanced.

A weaker version of the Exalibur barley wine. Aroma is malty with some sweetness. Flavor is bitter with little balance. Aftertaste is long and pleasently bitter.

Huge thanks to my sister for scoring two Dragonmead glowers for us.

This one pours a nice copper color with tan head. The aroma is a bit mild with fruity esters like plums, dates and cherries as well as grapefruit hops and a mild sense of hotness on the nose from the alcohol. The taste begins with sweet nectar maltiness mixing with grapefruit and orange citrus hop bitterness. The rich sweet sugary maltiness cut the hop bitterness creating a pleasing balance. Then mild dark fruity esters enter with notes of prunes, cherries, dates and plums. It gets peppery as the finish approaches. Could use a year or more of age.

On tap. Pours a slightly amber gold with thick off-white head. Aroma strong of citrus hops, caramel, and some sweet fruits. Flavor is similar, quite complex. I detect a bit for frutiness than in the aroma, but pretty nice. I haven’t found any barley wines that I truly love yet, but of what I have tried to date, I would put this on the same footting as Bigfoot.
