Commercial Description:
The great German brewing tradition began before the advent of refrigeration. Before they were able to do lagers and pilsners, the Germans did fine ales. This Altbier (or Old Style Beer) is brewed with three different malts and one addition of Spalt hops to create a smooth coppery colored beer that goes down easy.

Pours a nice reddish dark brown with a great head of brown foam. Scant lacing but good head retention. Mild fruity malt in the aroma. Ah, nice job here. Clean and flavorful - good maltiness with some toffee and some appley flavor, great hopping with a mild bitterness up front, and a pronounced bitterness in the aftertaste. Medium body, great carbonation. I had a couple pints at the brewpub, then bought a growler to take on a road trip. It saved me from the beer wasteland that is Tiffin, Ohio. Well, that might be a little harsh - but it did save me from a night of drinking Killians.

On tap @ the brew pub: Pours a clear copper color with a light tan head. Aroma, pale bready malts, with some yeast and herbal and grassy hops. Flavor, yeasty, grassy with some spices and bready malts, some herbal hop notes as well. This was a pretty nice alt.

Tap at D’Mead. Weak but otherwise good aroma. Excellent lacing. Not a bitter as I was expecting. Worth a try. They must of tweeked this beer since 2002.

One tap at the brewer. Very nice looking, dark reddish brown with a thick offwhite head. Slight german hop aroma with a little sweetness behind it in the smell. Taste is that of a good red ale, big malts backed up by hops, balance is towards malts that are not overly sweet, and have a little roastiness and toastyness (more of that could make this a great beer, to me at least). Very smooth, fairly balanced, medium body.

On tap at Dragonmead. Hazy orange-brown body, thin buff head. Leafy, earthy, light hops nose. Peppery burnt fall leaves body, tannic, with a bitter almost astringent finish (oak leaves come to mind). Toasty malt with subtle sweetness provides a bit of balance.

Draft... Clear, deep, dark amber ale with a small, fizzy, off-white head. The nose is mostly nondescript, but I am finally able to pick up some light, earthy hops. Bitter brew with light crystal malt-like notes. Full-bodied with a velvety mouthfeel and mild carbonation. Semi-sweet, then a subtly bitter finish.

On tap at the Dragonmead Brew Pub. Poured a medium amber color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of bread, yeast, and some earthiness. Tastes of the same bready and earthiness with some caramel.
