dmschefke (371), Eastpointe, Michigan, USA May 13, 2009 Pours a nice amber gold with WAY too thick white head, bartender said that this batch was way overcarbonated and has been a problem. Aroma strong of mostly malt, caramel, and sweetness. Flavor is really no surprise compared to the aroma with the addition of some light spices. Pretty good, but I am just not a barley wine fan I guess. jimmack34 (560), Lancaster, Ohio, USA Mar 15, 2009 On tap at Dragonmead 3-13-09. Poured cloudy amber some lacing. Smelled of thick malt, some alcohol, and fruity. Tasted very sweet, some light fruit, like apple and grape, some dark fruit, like prune, cherry, fermented berry, and raisin. Decent alcohol presence. Very sticky body. hopdog (5525), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 3, 2009 On tap at the Dragonmead Brew Pub. Poured a medium and cloudy golden color with a very larged sized, frothy white head. Aromas of caramel, citrus, floral, and herbal. Tastes of caramel, citrus, the same herbalness, and fruity. Light alcohol in the finish but overall very well hidden. beerbuzzmontreal (2909), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Jan 5, 2007 Clear amber pour with a ring of white lace. Aroma of caramel and hops. Flavor of hops and burnt caramel with a bitter finish. The palate is light an oily with soft carbonation. Average. hopscotch (5437), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Dec 29, 2006 Draft... Clear, deep amber ale with a huge, off-white head. Terrific retention. Nose of toffee, fuzzy fruit and pine. Earthy, sweet flavor. Nicely bittered, but the hops don’t cut too deeply into the malt. Full-bodied and syrupy with subtle carbonation. Sweet, boozy finish. Dries out at the wee end. StewardofGondor (1934), Washington Heights - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Aug 15, 2006 Tap @ GTMW 2006. Semi-translucent and caramel bronze in color with an icy grey sheaf on top and a few sporadic bubbles. Sweet orange marmalade glazes marigolds and baguettes, aromatically meeting orange hearts and spruced pines. Forestry bittered flavor aligns with tropically sugar-sweetened corn flakes. Fairly massive mouth feel hinges on orange liveliness and buttery amaretto sweetness. A bit of a barleywine letdown, with a chalky chocolate toffee trail and perfumed maple nut fudge brick follow-through into the finish. MIBRomeo (1962), Wisconsin, USA Aug 13, 2006 light brown color off white head. Some hot hop alcohol dominates grass and light citrus aromas. AVg palate. Overly dry grassy flavor weak sweet carmel malts. Very boring bordering on bad BW. sandwichpants (117), Royal Oak, Michigan, USA Feb 7, 2006 My favorite from this brewery so far. Light copper, or deep amber appearance, lots of well retained head. Much more hoppy than I expected, a wonderful floral, and a little herby hop aroma. Flavour combined a decent bitterness with carmely malts and the aroma persisting through an alcoholic finish. Perhaps the malt content is low, but it seemed lighter than other barleywines I’ve had, lacking those wonderful dark fruity flavours. and the heavier body. This seemed half barleywine, half a bright flavoured/lighter body Imperial IPA to me.
