Commercial Description:
This is the ultimate Belgian style. The very high gravity of this beer is balanced by the smoothness of its finish. Banana and Clove aromas come from the Belgian yeast strain combining with the generous dose of Belgian Candi Sugar. The Saaz hops help to give this beer a balanced bitterness with no noticeable hop aroma.

Draft at HDG Daze of the Devil II. Pored a brownish/amber with a small tight whiteish head. Aromas of candied sugar, yeast, citrus and grass. Medium bodied, medium carbonation and a medium dry finsih.....did I mention that this was on the medium side?? Citrusy flavor with notes of sugar, yeast and bread. Insert witty sentnece here about dragons, mead and wenches if you feel so inclined.

Poured a hazy golden color with a small white head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of citrus, toasted malts, earthy yeast, coriander, some banana, and alcohol. Taste of sweet toffee, toasted malts, citrus, coriander, cardamom, and some alcohol in the finish.

On tap at the Hop Devil Grill. Aroma of banana, yeast and spice. Flavor was sweet with the same flavors of banana, yeast and spice. Solid version of the style.

Draft at the Hop Devil Grill. Aroma of some grain, yeast, and clove. The flavor is sweet malt, banana, and clove. All a bit subtle / dry for the high alcohol content.

12 oz Bottle. Crabapple and currant aroma, blessed with a bit of orange peel and some coriander seeds. High ester profile, dappled with phenols and maybe under the influence of just a little bit too much yeast. Band-aids creep in. Pours in the paler range of amber, with sienna tint and rim of white, fine. Flavor moves as an explosive, coarse and sugary mess. Wow. That’s disastrous for the style. Too much sugar, too much alcohol, and medicinal character all over the place. Hops try to put the fire out, but only gum up the picture. High carbonation is nice, but the flavor profile is disagreeable. Not well controlled. A bit meaty; pale flesh. Not a total disaster, but really not a well-brewed beer, considering the difficulty of the style. Bland finish.

12 oz. bottle, no bottling/freshness date, sampled in a chalice. Cloudy appearance, golden hued orange in color, one finger high head of creamy white foam, decent retention, minimal amount of sticky lace at the brim of the glass. Mellifluous nose of sweet banana and honey covered bread, plus additional yeasty smells of earthy spice and a ton of clove. As this tripel warms a light tropical fruitiness comes out, mingling with the banana scents. Firm and full bodied feeling, for me, too thick and chewy for the style, making this a prolonged sipper, it took me awhile to get use to the mouthfeel. As in the aroma, this is quite sweet tasting at first, candied banana, honey and sweet doughy bread. In the middle sticky clove and lingering bubble gum tastes become more pronounced. At the end, lightly toasted pale malts and a fine hop spiciness emerge before being overwhelmed by the yeasty finish, namely flavors of earthy spice, clove bubble gum and soft banana. An interesting tripel from Dragonmead, different, but smooth tasting overall, well worth trying.

Bottle. Poured a golden color. Aroma is sweet and very nice. Taste is a mouthful so many flavors and it sweet and a lot of banana hints to it.

Pours a murky orange brownish orange color with a quickly disapating head. I often wondered how a beer could scroe really low on the "Appearance" score, but I have now found out. Looks totally shitty. Smells funky too, but not horrible with the Saaz hops making their prescence known amongst the honeydew, banana, coriander, and candi sugar. The flavor is nice with a light spice, sweet fruity malt flavors and the crispness of the traditional Saaz hops to round things out. Mouthfeel leaves a little bit to be desired, but is largely unoffensive. Overall, pretty week Tripel, but not an awful drink.
