polomagnifico (532), Saginaw, Michigan, USA May 19, 2008 Aroma is sugary sweet with roasted malt and caramel notes. Black hue with a good looking tan head. Flavor has notes of roasted coffee, chocolate but also an off metal taste. Medium to full bodied and soft. A bit of a cloying feel. Almost there but what happens near the finish kills it. sliffy (1966), Columbus, Ohio, USA Oct 11, 2007 On tap @ the brew pub: Pours black with a tan coffee colored head. Aroma, chocolate, roasted notes, it was on nitro and you could tell. Flavor, honey, chocolate, some milky notes, sweet and nitro smooth. Pailhead (2572), Allen Park, Michigan, USA Jul 15, 2007 On tap: The aroma is a combination of chocolate, roasted coffee, honey, faint smoke, and black licorice. It’s a dark brown with no transparency and a moderate beige head. The flavor starts with some faint cocoa and finishes with roasted coffee, honey, and the faintest touch of black licorice. Thin but soft mouthfeel. hopscotch (5440), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Jan 3, 2007 Draft... Way dark, opaque, burnt orange ale with a large, brown head. Subtle aromas of vanilla and cocoa. Just a touch of acetaldehyde in the flavor, but mostly chocolaty and mildly bitter. Full-bodied and ultra-silky with barely noticeable carbonation. Bitter, chocolaty finish... dries out. badnewsbeers (1026), Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA Feb 27, 2006 not bad...on tap a Crunchy’s...body is dark brown-almost black with medium head...aroma is a tad indistinct, but offers the usual chocolate notes...flavor is quite the same, with a touch of honey (Silphium is dead on with the butterscotch reference as well)...nothing much else to talk about Silphium (2114), Haslett, Michigan, USA Feb 26, 2006 On tap at Crunchy’s. Dark brown body, thin/medium off-white head. A rather nondescript porter with chocolate notes and an interesting musty, sweet nectary characteristic provided by the honey. Hints of butterscotch. Lacks complexity and punch. PeterLikesBeer (104), Berwyn Heights, Maryland, USA Dec 15, 2005 Pours dark brown with a tan head. Aroma has lots of sweetness mostly from honey. Flavor is thin but very sweet and there is a nice honey aftertaste. A good session beer. weeare138 (933), Collegeville, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 2, 2005 Appears a dark brown/black with a tan head that quickly fades and leaves tiny spotty lacing around the glass.
