Commercial Description:
A Russian Classic! This stout is extremely big. Thick and malty, this stout is created with six-row barley as well as roasted, Chocolate and Caramel malts. The E. Kent Goldins hops do not quite take up all of the malt sweetness. You can't see through this beer but you can see how just a little goes a long way.

this is a distint rating taken during michigan winter beer festival, 2009...unfortunately, notes were not taken on most of these beers, but numbers are accurate.

Tap at the brewery. black pour with with not head. Slight roasted aroma of coffee and a touch creamy. The flavor is very good. lots of roasted malts, barley, with hints of sweetness and chocolate. kinda thin on mouthfel and a cereal like finish. I wouldnt call it an Impy but it is very good.

On tap at the Dragonmead Brew Pub. On Cask. Poured a deeper black color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of chocolate, roast, and some dark fruits. Tastes of chocolate, roast, dark fruits, and lighter coffee. Chocolate in the forefront of both the aromas and tastes. Lacing left on the glass.

Cask at GTMW. Poured deep black with a creamy, well-retained cap of beige head. The aroma picked up dark chocolate and deep caramel on a rather weak nose with touches of coffee and vanilla sweetness following.. enjoyable, but it needed more power. The flavor had dark, semi-burnt chocolate and coffee at the core with dry coffee bitterness surrounding.. carried dry-roasted baker’s chocolate through the finish.. solid. Medium-bodied and quite dry on the palate with OK flow to it.. decent one.

Courtesy of Ibrew2or3’s sister who is clearly a wonderful human being. The aroma is somewhat chemical tinged and along with that I get the disparate flavors of fresh snapped tree branch, chicory, veggies, boozy alcohol and earthy clay. It is a very odd aroma and while mostly bad, it’s odd enough to be interesting The body is a deep black and holds a creamy, lasting, mocha head. The fore is chicory, milk sugar, herbs and veggies, clay, hazelnut chocolate and coffee. Odd as hell. At times I like it and then I taste things I really dislike. Just an odd beer.

Draft and bottled. Pours a dark body loads of malt, chocolate, caramel, and sweetness load this one. Little bit of smoke and roast comes together well, just not for me.

Draft @ Brewpub: This beer pours blackest black with a frothy tan head. Smells of toasted chocolate malts and liquid smoke. Packed a bit too much of a bitter hop wallop for an RIS, so it was a bit weird and unbalanced for my tastes.

Black pour with tan lacing. Milk chocolate aroma, coffee and cinnamon. Lots of bitter dark chocolate flavor, coffee and a hint of floral hops in the finish. Oily full body.
