hopdog (4779), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 28, 2008 12oz bottle. Gusher alert. This one poured all and I mean all off white head. Took a long time to settle to a brownish color. Aromas of caramel, chocolate, roast, and earthy. I expected that this bottle was bad from the way it opened and poured and the tastes confirmed it? Sour and tart. May need to re-rate if someone ever send me another one!

msante79 (341), Orland Hills, Illinois, USA Nov 20, 2008 On cask at brewery. Pours ruby reddish brown with beige head. Aroma of malt, brown sugar and toffee. Flavor is malty with brown sugar, toffee and light chocolate flavors. Mouthfeel was smooth and creamy. Drinkablility was good for a scotch ale. Nice solid brew. jstraw (523), Oak Park, Illinois, USA Oct 30, 2008 Black with faint tan head / Mild caramel and chocolate nose / Medium body, fine carbonation, somewhat sour, with syrupy malts and some dryness on the decent finish / Muted flavors of roast barley, caramel, milk chocolate, dates, vanilla, and oak / Improves radically as it warm, a good solid brew. BigBeer45 (502), Troy, Michigan, USA Sep 19, 2008 Bottle, pours a dark ruby with brown edges, has a small head of off-white to tan bubbles, ale left a few bubbled lacings on the glass when swirled and as I drank, aromas of caramel, toffee, faint earthiness, generous malt sweetness on the nose, hints of chocolate, some aromas that resemble burnt or dark caramel(?), alcohol is really faint on the nose (after it warmed up), flavor of dark roasted malt, some smoke and/or burnt malt, burnt malt flavor went well with this drink, dark brown sugar and molasses sweetness, chocolate, a touch of alcohol on the palate but this does not grow at all as it warmed up, hardly any hop bitterness, a touch of roasted malt bitterness from the roasted barley as mentioned by the brewer, mouth feel is pretty full, chewy, coats the tongue, one of the Scotch Ales that has more dark roasted malt flavors then the other Scotches I have tried, I thought the dark roasted flavor went well in this Scotch Ale, I found more smokiness in the flavor then the aroma, I am surprised the rating is not higher, maybe the later batches are better? I recommend trying.
