Commercial Description:
Simply put this barley wine is the strongest beer we have ever brewed. At 14.70% alc/vol with a starting gravity of 26 plato Drakes barley wine has been big since birth. Crisp malts give this beer a burnt red color and deep rich sweetness. Placed in a brandy oak barrel since Dec. 2003 it has been aging and waiting for you to enjoy as you would any fine after dinner beverage. This is a very limited release and won't be repeated.

Muddy brown color, no head. Nose has oak barrel, vanilla and whiskey. Soft palate. Brandy, lots of vanilla, alcohol and some raisins (making this beer fruity) in the flavor. Very balanced beer for slow drinking.

Bottle from trade with footbalm. Poured a dark chestnut color with a thin head, but looked a lot better than the Bourbon Barrel, which looked lifeless. Aroma is of spice, oak, caramel, pit fruit, and alcohol. The taste is sweet, a bit spicy around the middle, with the finish exhibiting the brandy notes, which are darkly sweet and dry. I prefer the taste to the bourbon version, with this version having more subtleties to it.

Pours out a very dark brown color with a tiny head. Aroma has a lot of fruit in it as well as some spice to it. Flavor was a bit sweet and over powered with alcohol. This is a very interesting novelty of a beer. I liked it but am sure ill never have it again.

Pours wtih a cloudy brown body topped by a thin head wtih no lacing. The aroma is slightly sweet and malty with heavy notes of vanilla and toffee. The flavor is slightly sweet and malty with notes of vanilla, caramel, and a touch of roastiness. Full bodied and dry yet smooth.

Bottled. (Txh Chris for sharing). Very dark brown coloured. Unclear. Very small beige head. This is a very peculiar beer. Very very ripe fruity aroma. Loads of raisins and dades. Alcohol very dominant as well as the Brandy barrel. Flavour is full of alcohol. Way too much for my likings. Sweetness and riope fruits. Liqourice and spice. Seems a bit old to me. Full bodied. All thats left in the end is a light nauseous alcohol dense feeling. Don’t really know how to rate this. On one side I’m all with mesandsim, but on the other hand I think it has a bit more to offer than just high density alcohol. Dunno.

A Mes rate: Sampled at ZBF, thanks to Chris for popping it open. What the hell are you people drinking?! Are you all crazy!? This is clearly pretty awful and for me an obvious high ABV does not a good beer make. Way way way too over the top. Very much like (almost uncannily so) slightly, and only slightly, watered down Marmite. Just way too thick and too much of everything. Much ado about nothing.

Bottle, 14.7%. Nice, sweet bonbon hop aroma. Cloudy dark brown colour, no head. The flavour has some yeast, salt, alcohol. Powerful flavour including lots of dried fruit. A bit chewy.

Muddy brown colour with a small off white head. Overripe raisin and plum fruity aroma with notes of dust and earth. Fruity sweet flavor with dark fruit notes and a dysty finish with notes of earth and wood.
