The original gravity was enhanced with the addition of 90 lbs. of California grown Deglet Noor dates as well as 60 lbs. of Belgian beet sugar. It is bitter hopped with imported Styrian Golding hops to achieve 25 IBU's. Imported Saaz hops, along wiht 4 lbs. of Coriander, were added at the end of the boil to imbue a flowery and spicy aroma. It was them fermented using a unique Belgian Abbey yeast strain at 72º F to impart some estery overtones. We sincerely hope that you enjoy this unique beer, our 1000th brew! Limited release of 375 bottles.`

Tap at Beachwood BBQ. Dark orange. Super fruity aroma. Maybe like orange tussin w some yeast and spice. Flavor is medicinal at first followed by oranges, yeast, spice, a touch of grain and a light funky flavor. I thought it was a little thin, but it was interesting.

On tap at the Carlsbad PP with golubj. Poured a brownish color. Aroma was of chocolate and dark fruit. Flavor was very sweet, which I happen to like. At the time I described it as "drinking liquid brown sugar joy." Very enjoyable beer from the people at Drake’s.

Draft at Carlsbad Pizza Port. Amber pour. Aroma is slightly roasted, chocolate, and fruit. Flavor is very sweet, with brown sugar, toasted malt and chocolate. Pretty good beer. Alexanderj felt like he was "drinking liquid brown sugar joy" and gave it a 3.8-3.9.

So I’m sitting at Carlsbad Pizza Port and I order a Alpine Nelson and one of this here Drakes Belgian dark ales and it’s like yumm! Light brown ~ small lingering head. Light malt and date aroma and big malt, date, raisin flavors with hints of sour tropical fruits, hops and grapefruit. Lovely.

On tap @ Drakes. Bready aroma and deep copper color with small off white head. This was like Chimay white with a few sugar cubes in it! A bit cloying on the mouthfeel, but a decent flavor. If bottled, it would probably be quite nice after a year or so.

Listed as Belgian dark GABF 2007. Dark tan pour w/ a light tan head, good lacing. Light bread aroma, some clove, pretty light and basic. Good wellc arbonated palate. Nice flavor. Sweet malts, coming through as sugars.. maybe its the yeast... anyway sugar on bread w/ a dry finish and a touch of honey. very nice brew.

Tap at Drake’s Friday tasting. Must be a different batch than listed here, alcohol is listed at 8.5%. Pours with a brown color and a nice head. A wonderful brew, very well balanced and complex. Yeasty flavors, with some caramel and banana flavors. Nice full mouthfeel, smooth finish. I would call this a Belgian Dubbel.

Good effort for a first belgian. initial head disapates rapidly. Floral spice and yeast nose with some alcohol up front. some grassy hop notes that mingle with the clove and banana esters.
