Commercial Description:
Russian Imperial Stouts were originally brewed in the early 20th century in England for export to the Imperial Court of Russia. These beers were made with a higher starting gravity and higher hopping rates to make the voyage by sea. Drake’s Imperial Stout is brewed to an original gravity of 21.5°P. by a mall bill of 91% Malted Barley, 4% Crystal Malt, 3% Roasted Barley and 2% Chocolate Malt. Chinook hops were added to balance the beer. A hearty yeast strain was used to create a beer that weighs in at a robust 8.75% Alc. by Vol. A Pint a Day Keeps Scurvy Away!

500 ml flip-yop bottle received as a freebie from Joey at South Bay Drugs when I purchased a whole lot o’ beer there. Pours mostly black with a decent sized brown head that lasts a short while. Aroma of milk chocolate and dusty and toasted malts. Flavor is mostly silky rich bittersweet chocolate as well as some coffee. Very smooth and not overly sweet nor bitter. More bittersweet chocolate in the finish. Rather thin body. I purchased this several months ago and think that Joey had been holding onto it for a while as well. I think it has aged nicely.

Appearance: Pours a dark brown with a small tan head with little lace left over.
Aroma: Coffee, chocolate and dark malts
Taste: Very smooth tasting, almost creamy. Roasted malts, chocolate and coffee.
This is a very good Imperial Stout. A very smooth beer to finish off the night.

swing top bottle (500ml). -from City Beer Store, San Francisco. Deep black coloured, almost no head, roasty coffee nose. Roasted malts, coffee and chocolate with notes of dried fruits and alcohol. Oily, not so complex as I’ve expected but still very good and enjoyable IS.

Bottle - thanks Toby. Dark brown with a bubbly tan head. Aroma is rich with sweet milk chocolate and espresso. Taste is consistent with the aroma, roast, espresso, and milk chocolate. Smooth, silky, and balanced. Very nice.

31/10 0.5 l bottle courtesy of ogivlado, great thanks for sharing! It poured oil black body with no head. Typical fine IS aroma, coffee, propolis, sweet chocolate, roasty, slight alcoholic. Hops might be felt slightly. Flavor predominately coffee with caramel sweetish as a little balance. Somewhat woody and might be herbal hoppy. Full bodied of course, but not so much as some other Imperial stouts may be, still with oily palate. Long and pleasant bittersweet finish that just reflects the flavor. Fine and enjoyable stout for sure, although not the best Imperial one for sure.

0.5l I guess flip top bottle courtesy of ogivlado who shared it withe me and heavy
Popured an opaque extremely dark brown/black body with traces of a white head. Oily, roasty nose, notes of alcohol, propolis, maybe coffee. Not the nicest IS aroma you can find. Bitter, roasty, almost completely burnt maltiness, sweet, some alcohol and coffee. The taste isn’t too heavy but it’s oily in a way. Ok but unimpressive or just possibly not my type of IS

Bottle; probably should have had this one by now as it is quite accessible. Poured a dark brown color with a medium sized light brown head. Aroma was spot on. Roasted malt, cocoa, caramel, fruit, vanilla with a touch of yeast and coffee. Flavor was good for the style, but not great. Roasted malt, caramel, cocoa and fruit predominantly. A touch of sweetness and raisin thrown in there. Some molasses and chalkiness. Palate is on the lighter side for the style. Good beer overall.
