On tap at pub. Pours is almost black with tan head and lacing. Roast, chocolate, and some woodsy notes. The flavor has roast and chocolate but also some spicy, bready notes with a tart and sweet finish. Almost a hint of smoke as well. Big body but with enough roast and hops balance it out. Very drinkable and well made beer. Walt (2291), Chicago, Illinois, USA May 28, 2006 Pour is not quite black but damn damn close with a thin tan head...smell is slightly toasty and funky with some nice woody notes...some cocoa, and general roastiness...taste is a little roasty as well, with the same wood and cocoa, but something else...something is very different about this beer...tastes like the Jolly Pumpkin Madrugada obscura...rich and tart at the same time...but there is a definate stronger tart flavor than I would’ve expected...I certainly hope that was the intention, if not, then accidents happen with good reason...very delicious and complex indeed...oak, cocoa, tartness, coffee, sweet...almost at the same time, like a palate overload...very nice...good work...best I’ve had here...
