Commercial Description:
Blanche Des Moines is brewed on 60% pilsener malt and 40% unmalted wheat. In spite of a close affinity to the Flemish witbiers this is somewhat different. It is brewed with a higher proportion of unmalted wheat which adds even more of the special, wheaty notes that are so characteristic for the style. Naturally the beer has been added coriander and dried orange peel. Furthermore an extract of licorice root has been added. Primary fermentation is with a classical Witbier yeast and the beer is bottle fermented.

From a 750 ml corked and caged bottle this poured a cloudy lemonade color with a very large and long lasting head and good lacing rings as it settled. The nose is pine, citrus, and coriander. Somewhat fizzy mouthfeel. The flavor shows a lot of fruit and the finish is light.

Bottle. Intense lemon aroma, moderately sweet. Cloudy yellow body, small white head. Mild fruity flavor, with coriander and yeast. Light finish. Very refreshing.

I can’t help thinking about Des Moines, Iowa and assuming that this must be "fairly plain, perfectly respectable, not something you make as a destination". This beer is a little thin but has a decent flavor profile of fruit (banana and citrus) and spice. Decent. Just like Des Moines. 750 ml bottle.

750 ml bottle: large white head, citrus aroma, hazy yellow color. The previous description of lemon-soda like was close. Very drinkable, nice spicy, just difficult to break the spicy down

Pours a light hazy yellow with lots of fine tiny bubbles and a small white sudsy froth. Strong citrus aroma of lemon-grass and pine with light hints coriander, soft ripe banana and wheat. Tart citric lemon first taste that is quickly quelled by soft wheat. I like the tartness a lot, however, its funny I would have guessed that the wheat was malted as its not gritty tasting. The spices are barely noticeable as the tart/sourness really is the focus. The licorice root and coriander play nicely together but are very faint. Crisp lemon, licorice and a touch of banana in the finish. The licorice and banana flavors really do taste like a juicy pear. Light bodied with light but very sharp carbonation, mine is not nearly as carbonated as others indicate, it is very clean and yea... lemon-soda-like.

It’s hard to say no to a fancified beer like this, the Blanches des Moines, complete with ornate drop cap. With a lighter wallet and a full glass I dive into the beer with relish. A semi-thick head clambers to the rim of the glass, with larger bubbles exploding into miniaturized versions. The body is very cloudy, looking like a full glass of melted butter. Dry orange rind, clove, juniper and evergreen needles lunge out and grab the nose amidst a wheaty backdrop, commanding the attention of your entire olfactory faculty. The flavor is similarly dry at first, but comes with a surprise burst of sweetness right before the aftertaste. Bright and crisp, the Blanche Des Moines delivers a lemon and wheat sparkle, before hitting the drinker with the concluding sweet banana esters. Served fresh and cold, this is a wonderful beer for the Spring season.

750 mL bottle purchased at Coaltrain Wine and Liquor. Pours hazy yellow with an average, frothy, white head, somewhat lasting with fair lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (hay, straw), average hops (flowers, lemon), average yeast (horse blanket, barnyard) with notes of pear, coriander, and ginger. Light bodied, sticky texture, lively carbonation, and a bitter finish. Average duration, light sweetness, moderate acidity and bitterness.

750ml bottle. This wit bier poured with a thick white head, eliciting a spicy aroma. The mouth feel is highly carbonated and the flavor is fruity and spicy with a malty tinge.
