Commercial Description:
Only available bottled (not bottle conditioned).
This was the first beer brewed for the Duchy Originals organic range. The beer is brewed using a rare breed of organic barley - Plumage Archer - harvested from The Prince’s Home Farm at Highgrove.
Duchy Originals Organic Ale has opted for a traditional, British barley variety Plumage Archer to give the beer a rich depth of flavour.
The organic hops for this delicious beer are also British, First Gold, a new dwarf hop variety grown in Kent and Worcestershire. The beer is brewed to Duchy Originals' recipe.
The Duchy Originals Organic Ale is a ruby-coloured flavour-packed beer which combines the rich caramel flavours of the barley malt with the signature ripe orange nuance of the First Gold hop.

Thick sweet caramel aroma with floral and earthy hops apparent. Brilliantly clear copper coloured body is topped by a low but lasting large bubbled off white head. Butterscotch and caramel blend well in the flavour with mild offsetting bitterness to prevent it from becoming cloying. Mildly astringent medium light body with somewhat watery texture and fair to low carbonation. Tulip glass. Just above fridge temperature. Bottle (BB 13-May-09, Brewery Crek, Aug-08).

This has a medium orange body with some hints of copper. The head is just barely tinted with yellow. The aroma is rich with some fresh wheat grain. Yes I have smelled this, I grew up in Kansas. There is also a light note of caramel and some molasses. The taste is light iced tea with some very light carmael and toasted walnuts. A decent ESB.

50 cL bottle. Labeled as English Ale, rather than just ale. It’s got that nifty English malt aroma that just doesn’t pop up on this side of the pond. Hazy light amber color with a white head that left. Thin to medium bodied. Nearly creamy carbonation. The flavor is spicey caramel with balancing hop. Tingles the mouth. The finish is almost dry, residual malt notes, and spicy/floral hop. Really very tasty.

Bottle and served in a pint glass: Coppery hue with a small but lasting off-white frothy head and fair lace. The aroma has notes of aromatic and grassy hops, caramel and toffee, bready malts, and touch nutty and earthy and just a whisper of acidic fruit. The taste is a straight forward mild bitter with the hops in good balance with the malt. Light acidic and biting finish, thin-bodied. Okay and quaffable ale.

Bottle. Well, is like other Wychwood beers or not? That seems to be the main question. It doesn't have the Wychwood aroma. Indeed, this smells as though it has been more fully brewed and has better quality hops. The aroma is top drawer - good musty oak. The appearance is Wychwood - a sort of bland attractiveness; mahogony. Better mouthfeel than Wychwood - not sticky, though there's a harshness that I don't like. A pleasant, slightly tangy ale as a traditional bitter should be, with an attractive musty oak. A very decent ale indeed. The character is more in line with Usher's than Wychwood.

Sampled at Cellar’s WIne & Spirits weekly beer tasting in St Paul, MN. Pours a hazy copper amber brew with a fast dissolving white head that leaves behind a fine film and ring. Aroma of some golden malt, a touch of figs, basket wood, and some grassy hops. Taste is medium bodied with flavors of mild multi-grain malt, grassy hops, and dry herbal tea and light fruit. Finish is slightly watery, some herbal tea aftertaste with a mild bitterness that quickly disappears.

Bottle (500ml). Shared with mds and tupalev, tupalev’s bottle. Hazy orange, smallish bubbly-frothy head. Soft, earthy bready yeast aroma, sweet but light. Very grainy and soft taste, odd hint of orange zest in it, sweet aftertaste. Light yet full body, wheaty and mildly malty, not much carbonation - a little sweet for an ESB, but pleasant.
