What makes this beer unique is the fact that it is a version alt bier. Alt is the German word for old, old meaning, the "old style" of brewing beer. Unlike most German beers being brewed, with notable exceptions, Duckstein is an ale, not a lager. Alt bier is a style that you won’t find too often outside of Dusseldorf, Germany, so Duckstein is definately unique in that regard. What also makes it unique is an old process, that is proudly practiced by A-B here in the US, and used in the brewing of Budweiser. That process is called "Rotblondes Oberbrau auf Buchenholz Gereift". Duckstein is aged over beech wood chips. This unique beech wood aging process, gives Duckstein(and Budweiser) a brilliant clarity, and subtle hints of wood flavor.
Duckstein pours to a brilliant deep copper color with a thick white head, and a lively carbonation. I must note how beautiful this beer looks when poured into a half liter glass. You use all your senses with a great beer, its visual appeal is all part of the experience of having a great beer. The nose is wonderful, grassy hop aromatics marry with some fruity esters. The palate is a solid malt base of slightly sweet caramel malt flavors, subtle touches of wood, and as the beer warms, more fruity esters. The finish is fantastic, a late, short, burst of grassy, herby hop flavors that dance on the tongue. Wow. I’m blown away.
This is a wonderful and refreshing beer. I could see myself drinking liters of this stuff. Duckstein stands shoulder to shoulder with a classic Dusseldorf Alt bier such as Zum Uerige, it is that good. I would match this beer with roasted pork and saurkraut. If you can find this beer, seek it out, it is very, VERY impressive.
