Commercial Description:
Released for the winter season, this hearty stout starts off with an espresso aroma, followed by a smooth roasted malt flavor. We age this beer for over 2 months to allow the alcohol to mellow and the flavors to balance. Despite the beers alcohol content (8.0%) and intense flavor, this beer remains smooth and very drinkable.

Thanks to goldtwins for sharing this. Dark black beer with a thick creamy tan head. Aroma is deep and rich with a prominent caramel /dulce de leche sweetness. Dark coffee and heavy roast over the sweet dark malts. Flavour is oddly thin though, despite the promising aspect of the aroma. Coffeeish with lots of dry roastiness throughout. A bit of tartness in the middle followed by a heavy acrid roastiness. Thinnish finish. It’s okay, but it’s not great.

Event: DarkLord Day 2007
Location: Evening tasting in jquire’s room at the Hampton Inn. Thank you for hosting Jeff!
Serving: Sampled from a 1 liter flip-top bottle.

Tasting Notes
Aroma: Semi-sweet chocolate.
Appearance: Pours black with a small tan head.
Flavor: Dark chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, and some sharp alcohol bit here and there. Lightly hoppy. Dry, bitter chocolate finish.
Palate: Medium-full body slick texture and a bit thin from time to time.
Overall: Pretty good. I haven’t had a DuClaw beer yet that I haven’t liked!

From a nice 1 liter flip-top. Thanks again Jason! Poured a nice deep black color with a beautiful shade of brown foam. Aroma of......whoa......oops, infected bottle. Well, caught at a great time however, just before it became undrinkable. There still remains some nice flavours of hot chocolate and coffee. A rather copious amount of flaked oats and/or barley must have went into this one to give it an exceptionally silky and creamy smoothness which was the highlight for me. With the sour character, I perceived much of the finish as chocolate covered cherries........interesting. Not bad considering it was on its way out.

Very large bottle thanks to MrBendo!! Poured a lovely deep brown with an initial medium cap of beige head. Aroma picked up rich, deep chocolate with some tart cherry skins, cocoa powder, and molasses.. intriguing and alluring. Flavor found about the same stuff.. dark chocolate, molassess, and tart cherry skins form the basis for the flavor.. dark and dusty sweetness with more of the cherries at the back-end.. mild herbal bitterness compliments well. Medium-bodied with complimentary tartness (enjoyed it whether it’s an off-note or not).. grainy and a touch light at times. Very good overall!

Shared at the Hampton at DLD. Black pour with no head. The aroma was mostly chocolate and some bitter roasted coffee. Taste follows the aroma, with some added tastes of bitter hops. Interesting.

I was lucky enough to re-rate this beer (a few months ago). The brewer stood behind his product and sent me a bottle for reasons found bellow. This bottle was much better as I had expected from this brewpub. There was some diacetyl in the beer but there were very nice notes of roasted malt and smooth coffee.

Unfortunately one of the bad bottles thanks to TheBeerCellar (no he just needs to open the other to taste a good one). Poured black with a small tan head. The aroma was roasted with notes of soy and tartness. Coffee comes through. The flavor was very tart and not in a good wild yeast way I love so much. Roasted malt was detectable.
