Commercial Description:
Devil’s Milk is brewed in July and aged until its release in November. It is “dry-hopped” (hops are added after fermentation) nourishing the soul with an unholy alcohol content nearly double that of our other offerings while tempting unwitting patrons with its intense hop finish.

07 vintage, handbottle, courtsey of my main man Yaniv! A prelude to Barleywine Armageddon ’08 (tomorrow!). Amber clear reddish with a grey head. Overripe amarillo hops giving off that garlicy sort of note. a bit sweet, with some alcohol and slightly toasty astringency. Thin, and lightly carbonated, ala handbottle. Pineapply garlic past prime hops. Alcohol. Light malt. Drier than the nose suggests, thought definite caramel. A bit of fruit, straw. Lingering hay to grassy hops. I would have guessed American strong ale, as this is a bit too hot and low on the sweetness to be a barleywine, IMHO.

Bottle courtesy of slob. Pours amber and slightly carbonated. Smells of lots of plums, oranges, dark fruit, sweet malt. Tastes moderately peppery with a pronounced fruity presence and lots of caramel to back it up. Finish balances out the sweetness nicely with a touch of warming alcohol. Very nice!

Sampled at RBSG from Scraff. I had waited a LONG time to taste this but I wasn’t all that impressed. I like a BW to be a bit more complex than this. It was just too sweet and starnge for me.

November 2006 release, stamped black wax sealed swing top 32 fl. oz. (1L) brown bottle, served at the temperature suggested at the website, sampled in a snifter. Poured a dark woody amber with a compact, bubbly topped pale beige head of tight creamy foam. Good head retention and a small amount of laced sticking along the side of glass. A sweet smelling barley wine, caramelized sugar and toffee, raisins, dates and dark berries. The hops are relaxed and give off dry hopped aromas of citrus, oily pine and evergreen needles. Light roasted grains frame the edges of the smell. The alcohol is estery and only slightly noticeable. The body has a creamy lightness and is oily slick on the tongue. The hops play more of a role in the taste than in aroma. The hops are oily and resinous in the palate, quite sticking flavors of pine, citrus peels and pith, and bitter earth. The fruitiness is subtly smooth, raisins and dates mainly, and adds a mild sweetness to the taste. The malts are sweetly subdued, underlining the hops, caramelized sugar, toffee and lightly roasted grains. A distinct nuttiness come out in the oily and dry finish, with the malt sweetness trying to poke through. The alcohol has a spicy solvent flavor and provides a soft low temperature warmth to the taste. Not the best barley wine I’ve ever tried, but still a pleasant sipper and enjoyable in it’s own way. A nice choice to combat those cold winter blues.

Draft at Fell’s Point and then Bel Air in the same day. Don’t ask. :) Poured Amber in color with small off white head. Taste is well balanced with Raison tones. Hints a caramel as well. It hides the alcohol remarkably well.

Growler shared at Madness w/ the Moose. First off all let me say......WOW. I sampled this one again and again, okay more like chugged then sampled but I couldn’t let this beauty go to waste. Poured a clear reddish amber with a large white frothy head. The nose on this one is so hoppy I would of swore it was an IIPA or at least an IPA. Flavor is very sweet with lots of honey, malt and even a slight bit of rye flavor in there. Hardly any trace of aclohol coming from this 12.2% monster. 12.2% no wonder the rest of the night is just a "little" foggy.
